hen with black spots on comb

Hi! All of a sudden 3 of my 4 girls have black spots on their combs and there's no way it could be frostbite-we only recently got out if the 100's here! I'm pretty concerned. I keep their coop and run really clean to avoid annoying my neighbors. The only thing I had changed was adding some...

Why is only one of my girls laying?

Hi there my chicken buddies! I have 4 girls-2 buffs, 1 light brahma and 1salmon Favorelle. They were born on 3/23/14. One of them ( I'm not sure which) has been giving me an egg almost every day. It's pretty small and brown, about 1/2 the size of a Large egg. None of my other girls have laid at...

    Best Flooring/ Bedding

I've been using sand on a plywood floor for about two months. It's working pretty well, I use a cat litter scoop every day to keep it clean, but still having issue with flys.

    Beatrice or Billy?

Hi! My 4 girls a are 15 1/2 weeks old. 2 of them are Buff Orpingtons. Beatrice is bigger than her sister Ethel, and has a larger crown which is much redder. Also, she's recently developed wattles that are red. Ethel doesn't have any wattles at all. Do I have a rooster in the mix? I've only been...

    Best Flooring/ Bedding

So, should I be looking for the words "multi purpose" on the bag? I don't know much about construction grade sand vs. play sand.

    Best Flooring/ Bedding

Perfect timing for me on this thread!! I've just decided to re-do the chick condo with sand rather than hay. I've been reading both these posts and The Chicken Chicks blog about sand and I'm a little confused about what to use! She says NO play sand or anything that gas crushed quartz or cement...

    Keeping chickens cool

Holy Moly! It's "only" 98 here today! I dropped some of the ice I was putting in their water and 2of them went over and sat on it! I'm spraying them with cool water from a spray bottle since I don't have a mister set up yet :)

    Keeping chickens cool

Thank you!! That's a great article! And knowing how hot &dry it can get in AZ, you know why I'm so concerned for my tiny flock! They're getting a fan today. I've also started putting a block of ice in with their water in my 2gallon waterer. I had no idea that corn increased heat! And I've been...

    Keeping chickens cool

You guys are all wonderful! Thank you so much for the info! I put a shallow pan of water in the run-they love it!! Also, I've put a nice block in their water dispenser. I actually sat in the coop for a bit to check the ventilation - seems pretty good to me ( husband thinks I'm nuts now ) . It's...

    Keeping chickens cool

Hi! I have just 4 ladies. They are almost 8 weeks old. We live in a neighborhood ( for now anyway!) so my girls live in a homemade coop alongside my house. I also have an 8 ft run attached to the coop. Where I live it gets very hot-we're expecting some really hot days next week. The coop and run...
