"Tis easy enough to be pleasant
when life goes by with a song
The man worth while
is the man who will smile
when everything goes dead wrong
PS: Count me in on being blessed to see the sunrise almost every day!
I free range my hens so I use bells.
I have one on the back porch that I ring and start walking towards the compost pile with my kitchen scraps. They look forward to that each day and know I will be adding something tasty so they come running no matter where they are on the property.

I am very thrifty :idunnoso instead of buying a heater one we made one.
Started with a Christmas popcorn tin
drilled a hole to accept the light fixture with a 60 Watt bulb and filled it with pea stone for my heat sink
Put a small relief hole in the top to release some of the heat generated by...
I know you said the coop is away from the house but if you could run a lead cord this is a simple solution
A 60 watt bulb and the popcorn can is filled 3/4 with pea stone( as a heat sink)
It works for us and we get into below freezing temperatures most of the winter
Weather permitting water is in the run. I do have to move the water into the coop once winter arrives here.
I keep their food in the coop.
My reasoning is out of sight out of mind This way there is no food to attract and tempt rodents and other critters to try and get into the run.
Thanks!
Yes I am VERY happy with the tire lift system.
The arms that the tires are mounted to (when in the down position) rests below the access door in front of the bottom rail. It is not in the way of the girls going in and out of the run at all.
We used washers on each side of the bolt

They seem to be...
I have electricity in the coop
I made a simple heated waterer using a popcorn can, ceramic fixture and a 60 watt light bulb
For a heatsink I filled the can with pea stone right up to the light bulb
I only keep this set up in the coop area during the winter months for the rest of the...
#1 Layer the run area with hay for winter so they can pick through for seeds
#2 Whole kernel corn or black oil sunflower seeds a few times a week
#3 Oatmeal with chopped tomato or cut up fruit with whole Chia or flax seeds daily during the winter
#4 Year round they always have a full feeder...
Ruby and Jasper ( Border Collies) for the most part go about their day and ignore the hens unless one of the chickens is on my lap then they sometimes will give it a good sniff. which the hens do not seem to mind the attention
I just did a quick check and the average farm hand (Which is what you would be by the description you mentioned)
starts at $ 14.20 per hour
Personally I think you could ask for a little more since you are not a stranger and live close in case of a problem at any time of the day or night
