Talk to me about poultry netting - electrified.

I want to expand my run for the winter months and beyond. Right now it’s 6ft tall welded wire. Roughly 14x30 maybe, I can’t recall. But I want to expand it because I’ve added 17 more chickens and things over the winter will simply turn in to a muddy mess. I hate that. I HATE THAT. I can pick...

An effort to raise healthy birds is required

Greetings all! I’ve kept, raised, hatched, sold, etc, for 5 years now. And before then I’ve got my knowledge from several generations of family that have done the same. And this wonderful place of course :) Raising and keeping healthy chickens is more involved than simply collecting eggs...

    TSC Pelletized Bedding - Anyone?

Sure makes the coop look good! But is it OK? Worth it? I had 2 bags in the shed that I’ve had for at least 3 years. Finally decided to use them after i cleaned the coop today. We’ll see how they work. I’m thinking I’ll still add some pine shavings.

Incubating 20 eggs! Vlogging the process!

Greetings all! I decided to start a video diary of incubating some eggs. From start to finish. I’ll be making various videos along the way. So far collecting the eggs and loading them up. I’ll do one when I candle them. And another maybe on the lockdown day and hopefully I can catch the hatching...

Need suggestion on letting the chickens out in a controlled run

Now that it’s winter the chicken run is basically mud. Void of grass. So during the day I’d like to have the option to let the chickens out in the yard for that fresh grass and bugs. BUT, they can’t be free roaming because the dog would never leave them alone. So I need some type of mobile...

    I didn’t think I’d care

I didn’t think I’d care considering I had chickens in the past and collected thousands of eggs…. But it’s so clean and beautiful! I present to you the first egg with the new chicks.

New old member back with the chickens.

Howdy ya’ll! Been a long time away. Looks like my last post here was back in 2020 so I thought I’d re-introduce ya’ll to the new birds. I got rid of all the birds a couple years ago (No worries, they went to a fellow hobbyist not the frying pan). I just needed a break for a while. So about...

    Help stopping soil erosion.

Greetings everyone! It’s been a while since I’ve visited and posted so I hope you and your chicks are doing well. I’m back with a question on stopping soil erosion in the run. I let my run get overrun..ha! So I got rid of the chickens and I’m redoing it. Going to make it better for the new...

Keeping chickens laying during the winter - coop light?

About 3 weeks ago egg production all but stopped. 2 a day for the last few weeks now. They slowed down a bit last winter but not by much. I’m thinking it’s the shorter days. I put a light in the coop that I will turn on at dusk and run till about 8pm ish. IIRC they need about 12-14 hours of...

Can I raise laying hens as broilers?

I’m beginning to realize there is a market for meat birds in my area. Which has me doing a bit of research in to raising some. Not looking to quit my job and make a living off it but earning enough to cover costs with a tiny profit is OK with me. I know I can buy meat bird chicks and raise...

Alternatives to Sweet PDZ for poop boards

Hello all, My local Tractor Supply has been out of Sweet PDZ for a couple months now. They don’t know when they will get more and say it’s a suppliers shortage. I’ve been using pine shavings for the poop boards but I don’t like it. What other alternatives could I use that would do the same...

Gave wet feed for the first time. No one cared

First time I ever tried it and no one cared. I’ll try again this evening although I don’t think I’ll have to because as of writing this they still haven’t touched it. I know they feed early morning then rest during the day because it’s so hot and then feed again in the evening. So I think that...

    Large Flock Feeder / Feed

Hello all! After hatching a few batches of chicks I now have roughly 40. I will be getting rid of some of the roosters but I don’t anticipate many being roosters. I intend to keep 2 roosters. All said and done I will have 30 - 40 chickens. As of now I’m feeding them twice a day. Morning and...

5 week old chicks meeting full grown flock for first time

I integrated them with an in coop brooder and a separate run inside the run. I’m really amazed at just 5 weeks they don’t seem to mind each other. The hens cared more about the food than the chicks. One chick even pecked at the rooster and it just shrugged it off. Now to start it all over...

    A terrible realization

I’m currently incubating 22 eggs. Roughly 5 days left before hatch. I was reading the recent FAQ on storing eggs that was posted yesterday and got to the part about storing eggs for incubation. When it dawned on me....I never tilted or rotated my eggs while storing them!! Completely forgot...

Why is my hens neck orange?

As the title states. It’s been orange for a week or so. Only one like this too. Any ideas? I’m thinking it’s blood? But just dirty. ? Thanks!

    New brooder

Made this for the chicks I plan to sell. Going to put the pine pellets in it for bedding. Incubator holds 22 eggs so with any luck I’ll have 22 chicks in it! Probably will really have 15-20. It’s 3ft x 3ft.

    Bedding for in coop brooder

Hello all, I’m curious what everyone uses for chick bedding in the brooder. I built a brooder inside my coop which is covered with just pine shavings. Would this be acceptable bedding for the brooder portion of the coop? I don’t know if the chicks will have trouble walking over it at such a...

    Nurture Right 360 - leaking?

I just hatched the first batch of chicks in the Nurture Right 360 incubator. Overall very easy and I’m pleased. But...I discovered it’s got a link from a tiny hole near the back. Never had a problem until I filled up both A & B water slots on day 18. Or rather, I never noticed it until then. I...
