Is it too cold to put my chicks outside?

All of my other chickens were eaten last year, so I'm starting over. I'm using a standard chicken heat lamp inside. Can I use that outside? Is it safe?

Is it too cold to put my chicks outside?

I have six chicks - two are seven weeks old, one is six weeks, one is five weeks, and two are three weeks. I live in southern PA, and daily highs have only been in the high 50's or low 60's. Nights get down to the high 30's. I'm afraid that it is too cold to put my older chicks outside...

You mentioned that if you need to take proactive steps in caring for Polish Crested's crests to make certain they don't get lice or mites. Do you do anything other than trim their crest? How do you know when it's time to do this? How often do you trim their crest? Can you hurt them if you...

Problems with older and new chickens

I used to let my free range all day in the summer, but I lost three to predators - one was eaten at 4:30 in the afternoon! Because of that, I now only let them out for a few hours a day. Do you not have that problem?

The chicken house is 4' x 4' plus two nesting boxes. The run is 4' x 10'. I let them out around 3:30 each day and they free range until dark.

Problems with older and new chickens

Here is my "chicken chapel". This picture was taken while we were still keeping the chickens separated when the chicks were smaller. I recently added a second roost. The chicks go to it, but ultimately end up in the nesting boxes. I will try to block the nesting boxes off after the chickens...

Problems with older and new chickens

I have two one year old chickens and four chicks that are about three months old. After keeping the chicks inside for several weeks, I put them in the chicken run separated from the older chickens so that they could see each other but not touch. I did that for about a month. Now they have...

Last night it was about 6:45. The most stubborn chick was already roosting in a tree. She does that every night now.

chickens won't go in coop at night

I have three chickens, all four months old. I have never had trouble getting them to go into their coop until recently. For several nights in a row, it took about an hour to get them to go in. Because of this, I kept them in their coop for a full week. I let them out for a few hours in the...

    Polish Thread!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a one month old Poish Crested. She has no sign of a crest on top of her head. Does anyone know if it could still grow in, or do some Polish Crested never get a crest? Or maybe I was given the wrong breed of chicken?!?
