    is it normal?

I haven't gotten an egg since end of November. I have 8 RIRs, this is their second winter. They are from a breeder and started laying quite late (6-7 mos old). Always laid well, until the fall when I had a few broodies, then some started molting. I don't use light or heat, just let them go...

broody for a month, questions, please help

I have 2 hens that have been broody for going on a month now. They aren't sitting on eggs, I dunk them in cold water a couple times a day and put them in an outside chicken jail, so they stay away from the nests. Why are they going past 21 days?? Has anyone experienced this? Thanks!

Not sure what's going on, at the end of my rope...

So last week my one hen decided to go broody. I've been trying to break her but it's not working, so...whatever. Obviously, she's not laying. But....my egg production suddenly went down. I was getting 8-9 eggs a day from 10 hens. Now it's down to 5. No clue why, nothing has changed except for...

trying to break a broody with no wire cage

My RIR has been broody for about 4 or 5 days. I've tried a lot of things to break her, including dunking her in water, putting ice cubes under her, and keeping her in an outside chicken jail so she can't get back to the nest. I thought the outside jail would work, since it prevents her from...

Has anyone seen this video? Help!

I'm looking for a video that I saw last year, but I can't for the life of me remember where I saw it. I think it was a member's website or a link? Anyway, does this sound familiar to anyone? There was a flock of chickens and one decided to walk up to the house. She was let inside, and proceeded...

Re-homing roo: how much will it upset my girls?

I really need to re-home him, though we all love him. He's wayyy overmating his favorite, though he has 10 hens to keep him busy. I have her in a saddle, which has helped considerably, but he's now ripping all the feathers out of the back of her neck, and unless they make hoods for chickens, I...

Gordie RIR rooster, free in upstate NY

Free to good home, my roo, who is overmating his two "favorite" hens. I'm tired of dressing them in clothing, so he has to go. By the way, his name is Lola. He was named when he was still just an egg, but he turned out to be a boy. He's a good protector, and obviously has no qualms about doing...

    Wow!!! They can almost fly!

One of my hens decided she didn't want to walk on the snow to get to where the other hens were, so she started flapping these long, feathery things that are attached to the sides of her body. And she was almost airborne for a few seconds! She took it in three big leaps, whilst flapping madly...

how long to grow back feathers?

How long does it normally take to grow feathers? I've had a saddle on one of my hens for over a month now and I don't see any real improvement, except she's not red or scratched anymore. Now she's just bare, but I don't see any feathers growing in. The saddle fits fine, covers her all up, so...

one more from my 'old' pullets, lol

Surprise, there were three eggs to collect today! My group of ten nearly-34-weekers now has three that are laying. The others look like they are still a good ways away from laying. Combs and wattles are still little and pink. Thank the gods for small favors, eh?

    Won't come out?

OK, we have some snow but it's not a LOT, only about 3-4 inches, if that. But my flock won't come out of the coop, not even into the run, which has a thick layer of straw and no snow at all. WHAT IS GOING ON??????

    Does anyone else feel uncomfortable....

...with all the christian/religious talk on these forums? I do. Just curious what other people of other religions or no religion feel.

    enclose the run for winter?

I've been thinking about trying to close off my run this winter, to keep snow out if possible. I have 2 tarps that have been on all summer long for shade, and they are tented so that the snow will slide off. Do you think it's worth trying to put something on the walls of the run, like maybe...

This is totally the opposite of what you normally see, lol

People usually ask about dogs killing chickens, but my question is the opposite. Has anyone experienced a rooster killing a dog? I have a little dog and yesterday, my roo chased him and jumped on him. I had to push my rooster off the poor thing. I'm worried now and wondering if I should get rid...

    30 weeks and counting...

So out of 10 hens, I have a grand total of 2 laying. At least they are consistent. I get 2 eggs just about every day, except for the skip one day. This is so frustrating.

    Chicken saddle - how long?

How long do you leave a saddle on a hen? Does it stay on for days or do you take it off at night or...? How, please? Thanks!

raising chicks this late in the year

I have a friend who is thinking about hatching her own babies soon. Is this a good idea? We're in western New York and it gets pretty freezing here in the winter. Is it possible to raise chicks this time of year? Should she wait until the spring? I know I myself wouldn't do it, but I don't...

    winter greens for free rangers?

For those of you who free range your birds a few hours a day, do you give additional greens or anything special in the winter (not talking scratch here, but specificaly things to substitute for all the greens they get in the warmer months)? Produce gets to be expensive, so I wasn't thinking...
