anyone tried this? tell me what you found, or shoot me down
prowling through secondhand store today, I found a upside down range hood
and got to thinking -- it has a fan, it has provision for light bulbs, it's made to withstand considerable heat
what about rigging it up with thermostat...
cheep cheep cheep -- yes I expected this
BLEEP BLEEP BLEEP SQUAWK .. expected this too
what I did not expect, was ... prrrrrrt prrrrt prrrrt -- almost like a canary starting to sing
or a mama cat calling her kittens
maybe they have been listening to the wild birds outside
(cardinals...
now --- baby chick sitting for next door neighbor who wanted "pet" chickens ... but who is sure taking her time cleaning out her coop to receive them -- has been almost three weeks now ... mama hen has the run of the property but the chicks are in my brooder (large cardboard box with perch...
my cousin-in-law's last name is GREEN, and she always has a big pinochle party and family reunion over St Pat's Day weekend
logical, huh ?
more than thirty people usually show up over that weekend; which features costume contest, best/worst drink and best/worst dessert contests, etc
I didn't...

anyone tried using an old crock pot or fondue pot as a 'bator ? seems to me someone had some success using an old electric frypan as heat source ...
fascinated with the challenge of...
later this week I may get the answer --
was at an aviation expo over the weekend and talked to the FAA Hazardous Materials person there -- about carrying-on fertile eggs
since we might have BYCers traveling from one place to another, who might be "couriers" for eggs ... rather than shipping...
brainstorm this morning, see what everyone thinks ...
most everyone building an incubator uses one (or two) standard light sockets, hooked to a thermostat ... utilizing low wattage bulbs or incorporating a dimmer switch into the circuit
many add a fan to circulate the air, to keep the...
at least two of us had problems signing in to the Forum this afternoon ...
both of us were able to sign into Chat
I could sign into the Forum only AFTER I had signed into chat
(I would get a message stating that I had logged in, but the next click, I'd get the message that I was not logged...
those of you stressing about your incubator hatch rate ... don't feel so bad
Blondie the EE was sitting on 19 eggs ... I didn't find the nest until she had them mostly all laid, and didn't know enough to mark them so I could snitch the newest-laid
final result: 8 live active peeping chicks...
just went out to check on broody hen, and behold ! there was a half-eggshell sitting in front of her, all nicely zipped open ... and I may have been imagining it but I *thought* I heard faint peeping the last two days ... wasn't sure if it was an echo from the seven half-banty chicks ... or...
haven't been able to find any water wigglers, water snakes, weird gel-filled toys, etc ...
browsing the toy and garden and pet aisles, I came upon a couple of possible substitutes ...

here is "mama banty and the chix" ...
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh120/Kaneke_photo/PICT4797.jpg
couldn't get any closer to get a better pic, mama is protective and chicks are active nonstop
as you can see, mama is a banty, I suspect you'd dub her "silver"; head white shading through...
newbie wants to know:
how long can eggs sit in a nesting place (free range wild chickens) with the temperature not below 55*, and still be hatchable if I can find/borrow/make/buy an incubator (or borrow a broody hen) ?
if I put them in cool water to see which float and which sink, will that...
could someone who really knows what breed is what, write us up a "decision tree" so we can figure out what we have ?
like ... is the chicken BLACK / WHITE / TAN / SPECKLED / BLUE / MULTICOLOR / RED

and so forth ...
that way we could at least make...
