Is this really a black laced red wyandotte?

This chick is supposed to be a black laced red wyandotte, but the legs are more tan than the bright yellow my silver laced wyandotte had, and just overall not sure about the feathers coming in either. Thoughts? In the leg photos with 2 chicks, “BO” is buff orpington and “GCM” is golden copper...

Great hanging chick water dish for $1.25!!

If you have a Dollar Tree nearby, highly recommend picking up one (or several) of their hummingbird feeders. You can easily pop off the top of the bottom red section and you’ve got a small hanging chick waterer! It is working great in my brooder!

    Brooder cleaning frequency?

How often do you clean your brooder? I realize it will vary by setup, size, number of chicks, etc. I will have 10 day-olds in a 10 square foot brooder (until I sell about half at a week or two old.) Is switching out the paper towels and cleaning out the food and water containers once per day...

FYI - Mt Healthy Hatchery has chicks available 4/26

At least as of this morning they had quite a few breeds come available! Just in case anyone was having to wait until May or June and was bummed. ❤️ (They sent me an email/ad about it. I do not work for them.)

On today’s episode of “wowww baby chicks are dumb” 🤣

So I hear EMERGENCY peeping from the brooder. Run over, expecting to see some sort of predator or at the very least the water dish spilled. Nope. One of the chicks has hopped on top of the heating plate for the first time. And now is “lost.” :lau (Edited because typos)

    Olive egger?

This is allegedly an olive egger from Mt Healthy hatchery. Per their website, they are F1 crosses of ameraucanas with either Marans or Welsummers Guessing it is a safe bet this is a Marans cross? And do you think she will look like a typical easter egger?

I wanted to thank all of you for creating and being part of a safe, happy, interesting, and educational place I can come when the rest of my life is overwhelming. So thank you. ❤️❤️

    Is this stupid or GENIUS?

I am “rednecking” a chick brooder from an old crib for the back deck since our coop is too far to run power and we don’t want them inside this time around. Here is my “stupid or genius” thought - Should I put a piece of food in the brooder while complete and leave it for a week to see if...

    Outdoor brooder - tips please!

I have 10 baby chicks coming next month. I have secured a crib (photo below) I am going to hopefully convert into a brooder on our back deck. What I am not sure about is the best way to make it weather and predator proof. Here it is: It does have legs, but I can’t find the bolts to attach...

🎉🎉 10 chicks coming next month!!

Just ordered 10 chicks from Mt. Healthy - they had availability for their super rare breed assortment (it has a long, fancy name I can’t remember). Anyway, VERY excited!!! Does anyone here know if the assortments come with a packing slip letting me know which breeds ended up shipping or if...

    Mystery chick

This chick was labeled as a black sex link…but I’m not too sure about that. Any thoughts? The feed store in question ordered chicks from Mt Healthy and Hoovers.

How long do you wait before giving up on brown eggs as “duds”?

Just wondering how long you guys personally wait before tossing eggs that appear to be duds. This is day 5 and I have a couple that look like bit fat nothings, but they are pretty dark eggs so wasn’t sure if I should give them a bit longer to prove me wrong? I don’t have good candling photos...

Muscovy ducks - how much space?

How much space do Muscovy hens need to free range effectively? We have about 1/4 acre that is fenced. If their wings were clipped, would that be enough space for them to be happy and forage a decent bit of their diet? Would they destroy the yard entirely?

Crib conversion to chick brooder. Need advice

I have a free baby crib I am thinking could make a great chick brooder for chickens and maybe down the road quail. So my wish list is as follows: 1. Outdoor safe - we may set this up on the back porch, which is not predator proof (although it is in a fenced yard with dogs). We do have access to...

Best temporary run for free-range hens

We typically “free range” our hens in our fenced back yard, but was considering if/how to have a run set up for when we go out of town. Thinking that would be much easier for a chicken-sitter than potentially having a stubborn hen decide she wants to sleep on the back deck or something. What...

Give me all your tips and opinions! Baby chicks!

We are about to pull the trigger on an order for April. Here’s the plan so far: Chicks: plan to keep 5, but ordering 10 (plus some for a friend) to avoid a small order fee. Hoping to sell the extras to recoup some costs. Breeds we are ordering for ourselves are: Welbar Easter egger Cream...

How many chicks REALLY per 10x10 heating plate? And how many fit in a baby crib brooder (and for how long)?

I can find the product listing that says 15 chicks can fit under a heating plate…but that sounds ridiculously high. I found a couple forums where people agreed 15 was an exaggeration, but what would you say the true max should be? Same question for a brooder made from a baby crib (the big...

    Help me narrow down breeds?

Here are our criteria. Looking to have about 5 hens: 1. Friendly/docile (these will be “egg laying pets”) 2. Relatively quiet (we have neighbors nearby) 3. No bantams (straight run not a great idea since we have to rehome or cull any roosters 😬) 4. No feathered feet - our back garden tends to...

Production blues (aka Rhode Island Blues) - any health issues?

I am debating adding a production blue, but wasn’t sure if they have the same health issues other hybrids run into or not? Everyone talks about what sweet, gentle hens they are and how they are great egg producers, but I’ve avoided hybrids in the past because I don’t want to cull a bird after...
