For Christmas my Sylvia decided to molt. At least I am pretty sure thats what it is. Normal eating, pooping, drinking and roosting. Combs and wattles normal. She is forcing her way up the pecking order by being possessive of treats. She has one lone tailfeather left and her neck is... well...
Its going to be below freezing tonight, 28 degrees. I have a small coop. Chickens are healthy, 8 months old...there are 6 of them.
Last night it was also below freezing. Inside the coop got down to 31 degrees.
I have a Brinsea brooder heater I can put in there, but I do not have a...
Serena, my Rock Star EE laid our first ever egg today! Super eggciting! Could say it's small for a chicken egg but I prefer too say it's incredibly large and robust compared to a quail egg. She got a treat and I checked her vent for prolapse and all looks healthy and good. Go Serena!
Mom purchased us a bin to dust bathe in. Then she carefully added sand and dirt to get it to the perfect consistancy. Its great and we appreciate her efforts so much we actively avoid it so we don't get it messy. Instead we dig under our coop.
Aren't we considerate?
Sincerely,
Mishy's...
I said for a while I would post what I did to make my storebought coop secure and upgrade the structure of it.
I am a female, not particularly handy or strong so my guidelines were that whatever I chose I needed to be able to lift all parts of it to build it myself amd to be able to use tools...
Molly was pecking around yesterday morning. Eating and pooping normally. They were all chasing each other around, hopping and chest bumping as they do. Then after a little flight hop she dribbles a small stream of greenish (grass green) liquid out of her mouth.
She is a 9 week old...
Guys, I did a thing! I designed and built a feeding station for my girls. Its not finished being painted and decorated but I am pretty proud. I built the coop, run and feeding station myself, a girl with no construction experience.
Best of all, my girls seem to like it.
We are having gusts up to 50mph today. I watched a gust blow Goldie over as she ran. They opted to stay under the coop. This is only the chickies 2nd full day in the coop and run.
I did not realize it started to rain as well and I got pelted as I tried to get them into the coop. They were...
Leaving chicks in coop tonight. They are 6 weeks and fully feathered with just two or three wispy baby feathers left. I am absolutely petrified. They have outgrown their brooder and this move is necessary but I am so worried. They are in their coop. Enclosed in hardware cloth. Secure...
Is Sylvie's lack of comb normal? I don't any damaged tissue or injury but she doesn't have a comb forming like the others. I thought she had the beginnings of one a couple weeks back but now there isn't really anything there. Also attached a pic of flock mates for comparison.
5.5 week old...
So adorable! I was worried my chickens were broken. Having them out in the sun all day started the urge. I feel like they learned how to 'chicken' today!
If you guys had not prepared me I would have been terrified they were dying. :lau
Paper wasps are nesting in my coop. I knocked the nest down but they are hanging out in the rafters. I thought with no nest they would leave overnight. It is not a large coop. What can I do to get rid of them? My babies are 5 weeks old and I wanted to give them some outdoor time in their coop...
My chickie babies turned 5 weeks today.
I feed them a medicated chick starter grower but as a treat give them a handful of Nutrena Organic Starter Grower when I come into the room where the brooder is. I greet them with an upbeat, "Hi, Chickie Babies!", and reach into their enclosure with a...
My garden is mapped, color coded and in the ground as of today. Waiting on some new t-stake labels to finish but planting is done.
Rather proud of myself! Go girl go!
