Thanks everyone for the input on my black chick. I think from reading some of your posts I will mark and save this chick to cross with my lavs IF it grows up without other faults.

Dipsy-Where do your black ameraucanas come from? Have you had your line for several generations? I still kind of wonder if this is a recessive thing. It sure looks different than all the other black ameraucana chicks.

I work nights so I was in my pajamas, but I ran outside to check for sure. Thank goodness for good weather and no neighbors. I would call their legs black, not blue. They have a greyish apearance from a distance, but when you look up close the little bumpy or scaly parts, kind of like...

Hi Jean. Yes, the breeder pair for this chick were purchased directly from John last spring as chicks. They have been separated from all the others since last fall, in a pen that is solid wood on two sides and chain link on the other two with netting over the top. I don't think there could...

I have a chick question. I hatched a pure black chick. I am relatively certain it came out of a black ameraucana egg. There is a slight chance it came out of a different egg, but highly unlikely. My breeders are all well separated, so no crosses. I've never even seen a chick this black...

I have a question for experienced breeders. I am trying to pick out one of my best roosters for a friend who wants him to breed to her lavender pullets. Unfortunately, the one I feel is best also has a large comb that flops over to the side a little. Since she is going to be breeding him to...

Quote: So I have a mutt? It doesn't matter that much as long as I get lots of eggs. That's half of what I bought my chickens for I'm just curious as to what I have if it's not what I bought is as. His hens looked like ameraucanas but some of the patterns were like EE's and if they aren't EE's...

Quote: If they were a June hatch you should be able to tell gender by now. As someone said, the saddle and hackle feathers are going to be your best clue. The cockerells will have long, slender, more shiny and pointed saddle feathers (on their back in front of their tail) and the same for...

I have not ordered from them, but a friend of mine got eggs from theme several times and never did get any chicks to hatch. She was not happy with her experience with them.

I got my first ameraucana egg yesterday! It's pullet sized, and a little greener than I would like, but hey, it's still an egg. Wish I knew which one layed it!

Quote: Kathy-Thanks for doing that! Those are some awesome pictures! I don't know how I would narrow it down to just 12! Cameras these days are SO much better than they used to be. Mine takes awesome pictures, but it is slow, so by the time it shoots my chickens have turned or moved or...

Quote: No difference. They're just called Silver because there's no other recognized duckwing colors, whilst in Araucanas there's Gold, Silver, and BBR - So the name duckwing is added to clarify that they're still all forms of duckwing. Well that explains why I couldn't see a difference!

With this website being "Backyard Chickens" I'd be willing to bet there are WAY MORE folks who are new or at least liimited in their chicken raising experience. If you put two chickens together, let them breed and raise chicks, I guess you could call yourself a breeder, but there's differences...

Quote: I can shed some light on that That is Bacchus, my never shuts up blue barred Olive Egger roo. He's from Patty Carson's stock. The hen he came out of carries a blue gene, and out of the hatches I had, probably ~25 chicks total, I got 4 blues: this guy, 2 muffed blue barred pullets, and...

In post #11712 there is a rooster in the background. Look at his comb. I had a black ameraucana from a reputable breeder with a comb just like that. I named the rooster "Donald" after Donald Trump. Someone suggested that the comb looked like a bad comb-over, such as Donald Tump presents...
