For those of us who don't know anything about welding, could you explain what we are looking at. I can tell that it is generally neater than previous ones you have posted (well done!). But to my uneducated eye that looks like a soldered joint. Keen to understand!

I will triple check with my farm stands but I am 90% sure the ones near me are local - they are always only in season and generally have the same random sizes and shapes my own produce do. Definitely not grocery store type produce. Most of mine are not 'manned' - they are on the road by the...

Interesting. Here the farmers markets (there are 3 within a fifteen minute drive of me) have a mix of actual farmers (meat, fruit and veg) and the kinds of home kitchen goods you describe. Once the season gets going we also get a lot of farm stands - basically tables by the side of the road...

Yes. This. I am lucky enough to have a half dozen established peach trees and they only just finished flowering. I guess peaches at this time of year must come from the Southern hemisphere.

Thank you for sharing your thinking. I am sure it was not easy, and there is probably not a ‘right’ answer, but what you did showed care and consideration for the individuals and for the flock. I salute you. I am also curious about your predator load. For you to have to act in loco praedatoris...

My hen Bernie ‘mates’ with her favorite hens. Her technique is improving. The hens seem fine with it. She sometimes escorts her favorite hen when she wants to lay and paces about outside the nest. But not always. She has attacked a hawk that had one of the pullets pinned to the ground. But she...

Oh goodness. The article I was meaning needed a glossary is simpler - it was the one on Pyrethrum/Permethrin insecticides. It had the following terms that should have been listed out. Permethrin: A synthetic insecticide Pyrethrins: A collective noun describing the multiple different compounds...

This article would have benefited from a glossary of terms!

Thanks. Saving that for a bit later when I go out to sit in the chicken garden. Edited to add: Read it. :gig :gig

Sadly not. It was an English School so there was not much emphasis on Scotland and Wales (though Ireland always seemed on the front page). I just looked them up (Wikipedia) and something about the side-bar tolls rang a bell so it may be I just wasn’t paying attention! It was definitely the kind...

Yeah. I opted for social and economic history. As a result I only know the order of the kings because some of them have numerals after their names. They didn’t seem very relevant. But I know a lot (well in teenager terms) about the spinning Jenny, the Soho cholera outbreak (the water pump)...

Thanks for sharing. Interesting read. I had to write an essay on the Diggers (or maybe it was Levelers more broadly) at school as part of ‘British Economic & Social History’. Or maybe it was an exam question.
