With single comb large fowl, it's too early to tell about the combs at 2 weeks old. Usually around 4-6 weeks, the cockerel's combs and wattles will begin growing and start turning red. Slow developers may take even longer to distinguish the difference between male and female. Hope this helps...
I suppose if you live in Australia, you hear the term roo all the time... which is entirely a different creature...
I had the same problem when I first heard the word "chook"...
A cockerel is a male less than 1 year old...
I plan to keep two of the best males from each family. The best two will be used for breeding, and the other two will be "insurance" in case something happens to either of the #1's. I suppose it would have been easier to simply say four... :P
I've been told more than once that if you use the...
Thanks, Mike. I had 11 hatch from the first batch. Since there are two families, and most will likely be male (male dominant breed), I figured I should play it safe and order more eggs to be sure I had enough females to get a good selection from in the spring. When the last 30 eggs arrived, the...
Shipping. Couple of cracked eggs, and tons of loose air cells.
A little... sometimes... if they'lucky. Maybe enough to buy a bag of feed...if you're lucky.
On the bright side, the breeder where these birds originally came from said day-old chicks are worth $8-$10 each and started birds are worth $25-$50 each, depending on quality. My chicks are high quality, so I'm actually money ahead. Or I will be... later. In a few months... :idunno
Well, I'm happy with the chicks I managed to hatch... and yet I'm totally bummed at the same time. The last two batches yielded an average of 22% hatch rate. 13 chicks out of 60 eggs, with a price tag of $165, figures to $12.69 per chick. These chicks need to be killer birds when they grow...
Already tossed 15 of the 30, and it's only been 1 1/2 weeks. Hoping I'll get lucky and get a dozen from this batch. Wish USPS had white glove service...
You're in denial right now. You'll come around soon enough...
Flawlessly. It'll be giving much better hatches when I can set my own eggs. These shipped eggs have been a disaster...
Unlike Parole Officers, my wife meets 60 - 120 inmates five days a week. She's a "Corrections Officer". Big difference...
You know how the system works, but you had to ask, right?
My handles all the bills, thus the joint acount. She pays what she can from her account, and if she runs short, she uses our account. It's a great system...
Hi, Blooie! Your world is what you make it... so all you have to do is build it. Sounds easy enough, right?
I like that the space underneath will also be part of the run. Will come in handy during the scorching MS summers.
Thanks, Liz. You know if you play your cards right, you could come home with a new incubator Wednesday night. Supposed to get whatever you want on anniversaries. Just saying...
