Oh ok, then it is likely a roo who just hasn't grown the sickle feathers yet. I can't tell on the legs as the wings are hanging over them and I can't see how long they are.

I would say he is a mixed color Japanese bantam as well.

I guess in order to know if they are indeed Japanese you should look up the breed and study the characteristics some. Try feathersite.com.
I would say it is a humidity problem. Either too high or too low. It could also be temperature fluctuations. I don't know where you live but here in GA mine do great during the summer but not so great during the winter. In the summer we have the AC on and it keeps the house at a fairly even...
If you are going to make a new color, I would pick what color you would like to work towards first, then ask the genetics experts here, if there are any anymore, and see what they can tell you about getting to that color from what you have already.
