Looks like a life-sized version of my ultra-efficiency ... which creates more troubles for me, when it's time to work w/in it (kinda tight fit ~'-)
One thing that you might benefit from is vents between the two chambers, which can later be used by 'em as doors, way down there at beak level ...
I think that protection from drafts is important, but that a good air exchange is critical ... somewhere, I'd published tables for the proper rates, which I could hunt down if you need 'em. But, even w/ it outside? If it's closed off too completely, there'd be no flow.
You could leave 'em up...
There should be laws against hatcheries sendin' catalogs this time of year, and folks postin' pictures of their current chicks ... your picture is terribly cute, but it's purely evil w/ temptation (thank God my multi-use brooder is busy housing four guineas right now ~'-)
Wonderin' if you...
I envy you that part ... nothin' more satisfying can ever come from any chicken than the excited laughter of the children they inspire ~'-)
Maybe not now, while so young? But, I'd sure consider incubating replacements, down the road.
I'd spend all that money ecoglow wants on wire 'n other equipment. For what it's worth? Most that brood once, brood again ... it's highly addictive ~'-)
I hate seein' cardboard boxes under heat lamps w/in folks' homes, but you could romove the flaps, and lower on corner (and add the cardboard to the inside bottom, over a layer of plastic bags), that way there's less chance of ignition from the light (there should be 18" min. between the bulb and...
White has a more farmish feel, to me ...
There's been so much worry over drafts that folks end up limiting air exchange too severely -- maybe the lower parts of the sides, or only a few of 'em, or just some fabric to block any winds.
Good lookin' setup ~'-)
Haunted55 came up w/ a pretty good idea, if you're lookin' for a one-time use ...
https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/731419/idea-for-a-brooder
... seems logical to choose somethin' you can later reuse for other things ~'-)
I built my outdoor brooder to be multipurpose ... it does contain lights, wired in series, so as to provide minimal lighting/warmth, but uses an old expanded metal table as the base. The glass and dividers serve to control air flow, along w/ the heat chamber, but you wouldn't have to get nearly...
Love the quotation ~'-)
On your lights? You're gonna want 18" minimum distance between the bulb and the floor w/ heat lamps.
I couldn't find the red infrared bulbs in lower wattages either, so I wired two lamp sockets in series ... this cuts the voltage across each bulb in half, along w/ the...
Glad you're hearin' that soft peepin' sound now ... your birds will suffer less stress, and it actually affects their tolerance levels for one another (just like us humans, I reckon ~'-)
I've two virtually identical waterers, and hang 'em alternately on the same two hooks, yet they'll empty...
See there? Somebody *was* payin' attention to this thread, after all ~'-)
Two waterers is an *excellent* idea, 'cause I've had my own contraptions fail a few times, but I'd kill the daylight bulb at night -- nothing more than a red glow, so they can get better rest.
You're welcome, and I completely agree that it's worth the extra money/effort ... heard where some employee of a chicken operation was being sued for the value of the 70K chickens lost, due to them mistakingly throwing the wrong switch -- as if it wasn't the owner/management that was...
Thanks for helpin' me feel better, in regard to my tendency to over[think/kill/do/complicate/etc.] stuff ~'-)
A few things for you to start kickin' around, since you're clearly never gonna be fully satisfied 'til you take things further ...
1. To reduce costs, and increase both the available...
Excellent comparison: Mine is ridiculously complicated, whereas your is ingeniously simple.
But, in my defense? Mine still cost less (as my own labor truly has no value ~'-)
Havin' only days 'til arrival left me w/ a case of the woulda/coulda/shoulda's, but this brooder's still got a bit of design under it's tarps!
To see the gallery > PECK HERE < (opinions welcome ~'-)
