Hi Troyer. I have neither the time nor resources at this time to hatch many birds. I think I hatched around 12 pure Asils and 5 Asil Thai crosses. I only kept 3 young birds over. The character of those breeds is self limiting in terms of numbers kept unless you turn your whole yard into pens.
Most breeders of "SQ" ;) Shamo and Malay that are worth having are not going to sell eggs. Period. These fowl and their breeders are not like the typical birds and "breeders" you find on a site like this. You should be looking for young adult birds, a pair or a trio, not hatching eggs. Be...
I will have to respectfully disagree with my friend Saladin here. Your little birds are not bantam Asil . Those birds are definitely Ko Shamo. They maybe aren't the best Ko, maybe they are still young, and, honestly the pictures are not very good, they don't do much to show them off. I will...
I thought it was always spring where you live, Paulo. ;). It snowed all day here at my place, winter is still in full force. Very nice looking ladies in your pictures, I am very partial to the white asil.
Ha ha Paulo, I was not thinking of you in particular or you alone, I just recognize these orientals are not like Plymouth rocks. Some of our American show breeds can be defined fairly exactly without exceptions in a highly detailed way. The orientals even where standards exist abroad are often...
Ok, I will try to help some, but I can promise someone will be along shortly to contradict me, it's just the nature of these type birds. LOL..
Compared to a Shamo MOST Thai TYPICALLY are smaller, lighter, faster, and more agile. Not quite as extreme upright, and much longer, fuller tails...
I'd suggest to just do your own research as to the differences. These breeds are not as tightly standardized, or even standardized at all, as most of your typical show type chickens. You may be better off thinking of them in terms of "type", not breed, you will see a wide range of variation, a...
What to do with the culls is up to the breeders discretion. As for me, serious issues get killed young, like crooked beaks or toes. Less serious issues but still birds I don't want my name attached to-- Pullets or hens I can usually give to friends and neighbors as layers, strictly given as...
I personally feel that a breeder being worried about selling off one's best birds when selling hatching eggs is not the primary concern. Hatching eggs are inherently a crapshoot, many times they won't hatch and then you're stuck wondering whether you should send more eggs refund the money or...
I don't think selling hatching eggs as a beginner is the best idea. Also keep in mind that you're asils are going to do much better if they are raised by their mother. You don't want a batch of chicks to self-destruct so to speak. If you're going to be selling Hatching eggs you need to have...
Sarge,
#1) I would not agree that all hatchery stock is unpure, whatever that means. Depends on what breed, what hatchery, etc. I will say that most hatchery stock is selected along the lines of quantity over quality, and not always bred with an eye to the breed standard. Does not mean the...
