Hi everyone, I'm a 64 yr old woman currently living in Eastern Ontario, Canada with my husband and I have always dreamed of owning chickens and now I am! I have six chicks, all just over a week old. Theodora is a Norian, Esmeralda and Prudence are Columbian Rocks, Violet and Cordelia are Rhoade...
I have four chick I’m curious about there genders, I got them all as SEXED FEMALE, the suramas born march 23 and the Cochin born April 1. Two of the suramas(Nala and Laura) have bigger combs then bluey so I’m curious if that’s just hens with big combs or if they are roosters, and for the Cochin...
Up until the last few days my hen has been acting a little more aloof with her chick as it’s growing more independent, but today she set the mark by leaving the nursery coop and roosting with all the adult chickens, (which the chick cannot get to because it is up a ladder) and left it by itself...
Hatched on 5/6 from a fertilized egg I received from a local farm near Indiana Dunes. The chicks are barnyard mix, likely with Barred Rock in their lineage.
All parent birds are organically fed and free-ranged daily.
Healthy and active, currently indoors under proper heat and care...
Hi everyone,
I am new to this chicken "thang" and am having a dilemma I wasn't expecting. I have been taking my 7 and 8 week chicks out to their coop for the day so they can get excercise and get used to their coop and then bringing them in at night until we could finish predator proofing the...
We live in Lucasville Ohio. Currently have 11 hens of various breeds. Also 2 roosters, one is a frizzle. And one little (hopefully) pullet in the house. Love my chickie babies, my dog and cat.
Just wondering. Which one do you use for feeding your new baby chicks.
Medicated or Non-Medicated and why?
I personally use Medicated because I find my chickens grow much healthier and I rarely have a sick chicken. (Been raising chickens for 4 years now)
Hello everyone! :frow
I just got done posting my intro as well as my photoshoot of my girls, and the last thing on my docket is asking y'all to help me figure out the breeds for my chickens. I do have the card in which was attached to the chicks I got so I do have a rough idea on what they can...
Hey yall! Wish my first post was something more cheerful but here we are. Got gifted 6 chicks that seem around 2 weeks old. Saw this little one have a small growth a couple days ago but wasn’t worried. Today i noticed another small bump developing and the beak area is swollen! What do i do? What...
My trusty ReptiPro 6000 died, and the ReptiPro company is no more, I guess. I ordered a new Vevor 25L incubator, which is basically the same thing.
But.
It's missing the VERY important cord notches that the ReptiPro had (see pictures below, the temp probes placed in the water weasels exit the...
I know they are very young still approx 3 weeks old but I noticed 2 are noticeably larger than the other 3. Has anyone that raised these before noticed that the larger ones were roosters ? I’m hoping to have 2 roosters anyways so it won’t be a bad thing! The tail also looks bigger already .
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
My wife grew up on a farm in Mississippi so she isnt new to them, we got our first eight (8) 3 years ago, of which, 1 remains - rehomed in MS at said farm due to a mother Raccoon invasion
(2) How many chickens do you have right...
I attended a webinar yesterday on raising chicks properly. This was run by Jeff Maddox and Rip Stalvey. They are both experts in their fields. Jeff Maddox is a Nutritionist from Fertrell and Rip Stalvey is a retired APA judge. I took some notes during the webinar, so here you go!
Brooding Baby...
One of my Roosters a Sapphire Gem and one of my Prarie Bluebell hens got the job done and just hatched this little one ! Not sure if any else has cross bred these 2 but excited to see how she turns out ! I assume there’s a chance she will be an olive egger??
I have a coop that will contain my hens but not their chicks. I'm afraid they're going to slip through the welded wire fencing and run off. Right now they're sticking close to mama hen. Do I need to pull the chicks out and raise them separately or will they stick with mama until they are pullets?
I have a total of 9 two week old baby chicks. 8 are buff orpingtons and 1 is a black sex-link. I had a chick yesterday get its tail feathers pecked at and she started bleeding so I cleaned her up and sprayed Vetericyn. I found out the black sex-link is pecking the rest of them, so much so, they...
I am so disappointed in my broody, she is a prairie bluebell. She is about 9 months and went broody three weeks ago. I was SO excited! I have never had a broody hen before! in those three weeks she did absolutely amazing, got off the nest in the morning and afternoon but went right back her...
Hey everyone! I have 3 broody hens, all in separate places. Only one is in a safe place for chicks to hatch. Another is in a predator safe space, but not suitable for hatching (milk crate inside the chickshaw) and the final is in an old mill house on our property, I thought this girl was...
