Avian influenza found in South Carolina

that's in NC but that's ok, it is what it is.
I mistakenly said waterfowl in my post but the article I read ( It has a duck in the article photo ...I read on they fly I guess , lol ) said wild birds also.

I think so far it's spreading primarily via ducks/other waterfowl though.

here's a site you can keep track...think it will update more often as things progress.

Thank you for that link.

A "wild bird".
Well that's super helpful. 🤦‍♀️

I'm further inland than where the infected birds have been found in NC so far but my avian/exotics vet has suggested to bring all birds indoors for a few weeks. Looking at moving my four into my garage as a precaution. I've got a cockatiel as well so limiting potential for flu exposure for him is something else I'm worried about. (Also the eggs I've got incubating right now would be hatching mid-Feb!)

Best of luck to everyone on the East Coast. But, I think/hope it is a little too early to freak out. USDA is just trying to get everybody informed and vigilent at this point. USDA, in turn, is responding to concerns from the CDC that there could be zoonotic transmission (to people) and a mutation in humans could make it more virulent and human to human transmission higher. The transmission from human to human is very low right now. The transmission rate from healthy bird to helthy bird must also be low or there would be birds dropping out of the sky everywhere.

The recent infections have been the H7 type. The H5 type is believed to be a larger concern, Remember, this is not the first time it has been reported and there have been similar incidents over the past decade.

One legacy of COViD is we will all be hyperensitive to these sorts of threats for the rest of our lives.
