Avian influenza found in South Carolina

There has been many commercial broiler facilities infected and depopulated. 3 were here in NC. You can enter search words on the aphis site. I count at least 12 sites in several different states.
The article actually says, "Depopulated birds due to HPAI only represent a fraction of the annual broiler harvest." As best I can tell, it's just saying the effect on broilers is much less than the effect on layers or turkeys.

The sentinel flock shocked me in the sense that we should have seen more of those already. Unless I missed them.
This is the first one I've seen listed. I even looked up what the were a sentinel for...all I found was West Nile Virus for FLA and NC. I found out we have them here in NC too.

It does look like somewhere a sentinel flock would have already tested positive for AI.

Last couple days there's been a few more states with cases.

Meeker, Minnesota- 2 Commercial Turkey Farms

Cass Co., South Dakota- Backyard Flock- South Dakota has reinstated Poultry Event Suspension for at least 30 days.

Elkhart Co., Indiana- On August 30, a NON-COMMERCIAL (hobby) POULTRY flock in Elkhart County tested presumptive-positive for the H5 avian influenza virus. Samples will be tested at the national USDA laboratory in Iowa for confirmation. The small hobby flock consisted of chickens, ducks and geese. A surveillance zone is being established.

And last night I heard the honking of geese coming South. Normally I love that. This year it made me anxious.
🙁
