Doing what needed to be done- first euthanasia

How to you do it? For any future situations I pray don’t happen. I always wonder what I would do with a deformed chick or a serious health condition.
It sounds awful, but we chop the head off. With a chick, you can even use a pair of shears or scissors. It is fast and painless.

When we first had chickens, I read about using engine starter fluid because it has ether in it. Soak a rag in starter fluid, put it in a bucket, put the chick in the bucket, close the lid and walk away for 30 minutes. They would just fall asleep and die.

NOT!
IT IS AN AWFUL WAY TO DIE. THE FLUID STINGS THE EYES AND LUNGS.
IT IS A HORRIBLE DEATH AS THEY FLOP AROUND GASPING FOR AIR.

I still shed tears when I think of the time I did this. Don’t believe everything you read.
😢

Best time to be considering it is when you don't have to do it. When I had my first injured adult bird I actually had to cage her while I ran inside to watch videos to figure out what to do. :(

Scissors for young chicks, broomstick for adults so far seems the fastest way.
