Hey all! I'm planning future add ons to my flock and need to know what chicken breeds you've had the best experience with being SUPER friendly. I'm talking loves to follow you around, enjoys scratches/pets, being held and just generally a super happy go lucky chicken.

My flock does not free range, so major bonus points for chickens that do well in a run vs free ranging!

Extra bonus points if they are also super quirky and funny to watch :D

My Barred Rock is a lap dog! She loves to jump into my lap and get petted to take her naps. She was that way since she was a little chick…
I second this! I've had only Barred Rocks and they've all been super sweet. Some of them are big weirdos and don't like to get picked up, but even they enjoy sitting in your lap when you "catch" them. Most of them though are absolute lap dogs, and one of them even comes up and begs for head rubs! They're also pretty intelligent and predator-aware too, which makes a good balance. My Roo-Roo isn't really good with people (he will sometimes flog and bite if you come near him or his hens) but he immediately stops if you pick him up. He becomes completely incapacitated with comb rubs! He earns his keep from: guarding his hens (literally jumped in front of a swooping hawk to save one), escorting the lowest hens to the coop for laying, helping his favorites find a nest in the nestbox, always giving every treat he finds away to his hens, and breaking up squabbles. He's truly a sweet gentlemen with his girlies! Just the other day we saw him a distance away from the rest of his hens because he was standing guard over our oldest hen, who was taking a nap in the shade!

While my chicks are pretty new (10 -11 weeks) so far I have had wonderful experiences. I will say my porcelain duccle girls and my ameraucana certainly have won best personality!
My duccles have always been incredibly docile, are curious, fly right up onto u and are just true sweethearts. My ameraucanas are my puppies/lap chickens :) the cuddliest babies ever.

Off topic from the main post but I just had to say, those are the most precious babies! Those little, floofy faces are just :love!!! I love them! We've actively socialized all of our batches of chicks and they've consistently turned out to be the most cuddly babies ever. You're on your way to being a professional chicken cuddler with those precious little ones!

Awhh thankyou!! I am so grateful for these babies. Just so gratifying to see all that love pay off. These ones definitely made it easy! Having all of them come right up on ur lap and get so excited to see u is the best feeling ever. 🥹 Ameraucana have stole my heart lol.

Yeah, once you contract the "chicken bug," you're infected for life 😆. I'm currently on our third batch of chicks (we have bunch of grown babies as well) and the whole family is just so in love with them! It truly never gets old ☺️. From one chicken-lover to another, I'm so happy for you!!!
