We are hatching Welsh Harlequin and Appleyard duck eggs. They are just going into lockdown today, day 25. One of the eggs has what I think may be a bruise on the pointed side. When I candle the egg, it has a normal air sac, good veins, and is moving. However, the other side also has what almost looks like an air sac, it looks lighter and I can see some of the duckling, including what I think may be the bill right up against the bruise. I am including pictures of everything I just described. I don’t know if I should make a safety air hole right now before the others start to pip? If so should I make it at the air sac and also where the bruise is?? Is that even a bruise, or just bacteria growing? I’ve read the entire hatching help article and everything I could find about bruising but I’m not confident in deciding what to do and when, please help!

Personally I would leave it for the moment. It looks fine to me, just keep an eye on it and if it seems to need help hatching do it then. If you do something now there's a greater possibility of doing harm than just leaving it and keeping a close eye on it. Good luck hatching!

I’d make a safety hold right over the bruise. I had to do it several times with breech ducklings. Good luck! ❤️
