... Am wondering whether it’s worth planting the backyard, in wheat n barley, as opposed to what’s euphemistically called….grass.

I don't know about worth it but it is fairly easy to do. Gene Logsdon's book on small scale grain is helpful. He calls his a "pancake patch" sometimes. He says pancakes are better when made with grain harvested minutes before cooking, just like vegetables are.
