International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Those are some gorgeous eggs.
Left side, 3rd from back and Right side 2nd and 4th from back...who's laying them?

You need to tag them at hatch or separate at lockdown. 👍
Thanks! I have 2 BCM hens. 1 has darker eggs than the other.
1 has a dark ends and some speckles and the others lighter with fine reticulations.
I bought some tiny rubber bands to tag at hatch.
Some of the mixed eggs have some marans lineage also. Its gonna be hard to distinguish the chicks without tags.

Yes, that's why I did all BCM this time. The MMM's look identical, so I'll do an OE, MMM hatch at some point.
I used bath bags cut down to s separate at lockdown. You can see one in this pic. Much easier and then I used super small zipties when I pulled them out of Bator.
I had Betty's and Joannies in hatch bags to separate from Angels.
Just an idea if you wanted it...👍

I’ve had the marans separated for over a week or so now, I’m going to start my eBay post to start selling their hatching eggs.

That is true, but more an excuse to post more baby silkie pictures. I got a surprise blue partridge silkie from my pen of whites and paints, I’m going to have to start a post because even I can’t work out how it happened genetically (the roo is pure white).

Post a link to it when you do so I can follow along and learn.

Bunch of cuties you got for sure...♥️

I solved it without a thread:

I assumed all silkies were dominant white as paints exist, but I’ve learned from looking at posts that most white stock are recessive white.

So the roo is recessive white, hiding partridge under, and Reggie (the biological mother) is a blue paint, but E/e^b.

I thought you had a cuckoo then until I read it properly. Do you use Broodies to hatch?
Yes, she our first in the mixed flock, younger BR. The other 2 broodies I've had were both BCMs Joannie and Momma.

Not sure yet what I want to do with yet as far as stuffing eggs under her. King is still so clumsy I'm not sure he's been covering his girls. (Check eggs). If not I'll have to release Kong with the mixed flock to cover the BRs for MMM's and my one EE for Olives.
Or I could shove more Marans eggs under her. I'd like more than just the one I hatched from Angel (F2) and then some from different hens. (Test mate).

Decisions...😉

I only hatch from my mixed pen when my number of laying hens has dropped, which they have. I have a broody brahma and a broody cross, might use them to hatch some layers.

If I don’t need layers, I focus on pure breeds. A surprise good quality chick will be more beneficial to the pure breeds than mixed, so I prioritise them.
