We are new here…and new to chickens. Please help us identify our breed (and gender) on a few of our babies. We got a few of them from a local chicken lady who thought most were Marans and a few olive Eggers. We also bought a few from TSC, so we know the breeds on those. I’d love your input on the mystery chicks. Also, can you tell if they are roosters or hens? The suspense is killing us! Those up for question are …
- Ollie (supposedly an olive egger but looks like many of the Marans?) The oldest of the bunch by about 2 weeks. See his/her friends in one of the pics? They all look very much alike.
- Marge from the same lady with the Marans but looks very different. Beautiful black and gray coloring. Slightly smaller.
- Erma - bought from TSC as an erminette. The youngest of the bunch and yet very aggressive from bri going her home. Is she a he?
- Penny - from the Maran source but has more of an orange comb. Looked like a penguin when she was smaller, thus the name. Rooster? Breed?
- And finally, Princess. Any idea what breed she is? She is just beautiful! One of our favorites!
Thank you all so much! We are hoping for more hens in our flock of 20 but we are suspecting we have at least 7 roosters (of course we love them too). Excited to read your comments!

Ollie and his friends look like Black Copper Marans. Marge I’m not sure about. Penny is an Olive Egger. Erma is an Erminette, and your only pullet is Princess, who is probably an Easter Egger. :)

Princess, the one behind her, & the RIR look to be your only girls.
This one in the crowd looks like maybe another pullet, but can't see entire body.

The rest are boys.

Oh my goodness. Lots of boys in this bunch. So since we are on a roll, how about these…
Reba we know is a RIR and hoping she’s a hen.
Onyx is supposed to be a sapphire gem pullet but now I’m second-guessing.
April was also bought as an Americana Pullet but is pretty aggressive and is much larger than the obvious hen counterpart of the same breed.
So with all of these Roos, how do you all decide which ones to keep in your flock and when?

And finally…tiny. Pretty sure it’s a “she” but what kind?

Onyx, Reba, and Tiny are pullets, April is a cockerel. How many pullets do you have? One rooster per ten hens is a good ratio. I would just pick the nicest one, honestly. You might want to keep a few for a while until they mature more and show their true colors. April I would not keep if he’s aggressive.

Thank you SO much for the info! Looks like we have 8 boys and 12 girls in our family now 😳. Any idea what breed Tiny is?

I’m not sure, definitely a mix of some kind. I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s an olive egger, since you said you got some of those.
