Last year we purchased a rooster that we thought was exceptionally beautiful and great attitude. He was the result of an Olive Egger rooster over a Rhode Island hen. He was thick in body, heavy feather with a short fat comb, thick legs.

We then bred the rooster to our two grey leghorns, two years old. which were the result of a Barred rock rooster crossed to a commercial white leghorn hen. They lay abundant and reliable large and XL eggs, great attitude and winter well enough up in this cold climate.

The resulting offspring were mostly sexlinked (unexpectedly) all barred offspring were roosters, hens were mostly oil slick black, some black/red with a very small percentage white. Since we do not focus on roosters they were shuffled to the poultry auction at 8-14 weeks. As the pullets grew they carried their mothers thin straight combs. Sires Dense feathering, sires bulkier bodies. About 50% carried the sires head tooft. The birds were unregulated free range so attitude was never assessed as they were sold before winter came.

I kept in touch with the customer who bought these pullets and the egg colors were suprising. Green, blue, pink, brown and white were the report’s.

Following are photos of the parents, then photos of the 4 way cross offspring

Would crossing a Brown Leghorn to a Rhode Island Red make a bigger bird than a BL and still be a good free ranger.
