A few years ago, I saw chickens several consecutive times in one month - a chick-holding day at the library, a county fair with show birds, and a farm with a big flock. I had never seen so many live chickens at one time, and I was hooked!

My parents didn't say yes immediately, it took a few years before we finally got them in 2023.

Grandparents, both sides, had them when we were kids, just a matter of time.

My parents got them first and I learned I loved raising them. Tried other farm animals, but chickens have been my favorite.

My great-grandfather had built the beginnings of a coop on this very property. Many years later, we finished what he started

A decade and a few more years later, and I've got three more coops/pens

Ultimately my grandmother did.
I'm from a long line of redneck types so many in my family have had them. Grew up around them.
I started with quail but then at one point I discovered a bantam chicken catalog. I was amazed at all the varieties so I looked into every hatchery I could find and ordered catalogs.
My mother was a little hesitant but my grandmother helped me by providing me a way to trade my chore money for some of her checks and SASEs.

Someone in my house wanted fresh eggs. We bought 6. I fell in love with the extra Speckled Sussex. The rest is history.
