The Duck Thread

@staceyrae I am so sorry you had to say good bye to your lil one but I agree with everyone else you put your duckling before yourself and didn't let it suffer.

I also agree that getting the lil one you have left another buddy would be a good idea especially while it's still so young. And you aren't replacing the one that just left your just getting the grieving one someone to be friends with. And honestly getting another duckling will help heal your heart too.

Bless you and your lil duckling please let us know how you all are doing.

Merlin is home! The surgery went well, and the vet only did the right cheek. The left cheek is pretty much normal now. The vet told us to keep using the Baytril for 9 days. They did also show us how to give the Baytril oraly.

Looks much better, glad you were able to get it taken care of!

Thank you so much for your insightful information I will be sure to do these things.

I have some very sad news. So I researched around and found a vet that specialises in ducks and raced over there immediately. So I walked in and he advised me that it has broken it's femur bone who's his the upper thigh part. He said it couldn't be strapped up to be secure to repair and if we tried it he said it would be cruel as the bones would not realign correctly. After further examination and the vet discovering that the two I owned were only one day apart and significantly different in size he believed my duck had a bone disease or something very wrong with it as the bigger duck looks strong and healthy as it should. He said that in his opinion it would be the most humane thing to do would be to let it go and not let it suffer throughout it's life.
Today was one of the hardest days and I couldn't believe how attached i have become to my babies. I did not want it to suffer throughout it's life and I honestly hope I have made the right choice. Now my other duck is upset, chirping and looking for its friend. I don't want to replace my baby so soon but it's not fair on my other one to be alone right?

So sorry for your loss, but I think you did the right thing. From what I know about femur fractures in birds is that they are *really* hard to treat. Lots of {{{{ hugs }}} for you.

I had planned to let the 11 ducks out side every day but having 20 inches of snow on the ground and very cold, I find that it is best to have them in lock down. Less work for me and better for them in that they eat better. I had picked up a square wash-machine drip pan that is meant to be put under a wash machine to catch any drips that may happen. I found it at a Habit For Humanity cheap, did not know what it was for at first but figured it would serve the ducks in the future. It is great to catch the water splashes at their water bucket. Every day I top their coop with fresh dry lawn clippings for them to browse through and warmth. If I would not have saved all my lawn clippings through the summer, this duck project would have been very expensive.
