Exposed Underbelly

For some reason, one of my chickens has had an exposed underbelly for the last month or two. The reason I am now getting concerned is because it is starting to turn red.

Why is this happening and what can I do about it?

We have been using the powder for a few weeks now, and it does not seem to be helping.

What do you think her problem could be?
 
In February, in the middle of our amazingly cold MN weather, 2 of my 4 BOs turned up literally OVERNIGHT with bare booties and red, raw, chapped skin. It looked basically the same as your chickens, but from the mid-belly to the vent where BOs grow that fluffy down. Anyways, I freaked and checked multiple nights for mites and couldn't find any. I dusted anyways and still no changes. Even still, there has been no evidence of cannibalism or even aggression. I sprayed each of them with blu-kote (DH called them Capt'n Crunchberry Butts), which also didn't seem to make much of a difference. I thought about doing the pine tar route, but figured it would be pretty messy with the pine shavings, so saved it for a last resort. I haven't applied it at this point. The coop didn't resemble a feather pillow explosion, so I am assuming that they were bored and pulled out their own feathers and then ate them. No new feathers have grown in. I've supplemented with free will kitten food, they get BOSS seeds as a daily treat and still no changes. Over the last 3 months, one girl grew her butt fluff back, but it's on the thin side. The other two are bare and red. They are otherwise completely healthy. They lay every day and eat/poo normally. And they all get along. There is one hen completely unaffected. I have no idea why this has happened or what to do about it. Maybe they will have to have a complete molt before the feathers grow back? Breaks my heart as I am in love with those fluffy, downy chicken butts.

Anyways, I wouldn't worry too much. I just had to accept the fact that I have monkey butt hens. If their skin is chapped and red, maybe try rubbing some vaseline or lanolin?

I have a hen with the exact same problem...and she is really uncomfortable. Poor Pearly....does anyone try putting some ointment on the skin? I don't want her preening the ointment off. She is going through a hard molt.

She's my sweetest hen, I'm giving her extra protein and greens...but she looks exactly like those first pics, raw and ouchy. Anyone else with this experience and how to help the poor hens out?

Zahboo, no not broody, she's a Red Star, not a broody type. (not like those Silkies!) She's just molting and sore...poor girl.
 
Horses love A&D Diaper Rash Ointment (The yellow kind--not the white kind with zinc in it) in their ears to soothe the bites and scabs that gnats make there. The ointment also repels the gnats.
Maybe that ointment would also help repel mites from chicken hind ends as well as be soothing??
