Exposed Underbelly

Moxidectin is a good way to treat for mites, too. It is sold as Quest or Quest Plus gel dewormer for horses.
Just put a dab a little smaller than the size of a pea in your chicken's mouth & then offer some additional yummy treat to ensure the chicken swallows. The Moxidectin goes into the chicken's system and when mites bite they will die.
Treating orally like this has been more effective and efficient for me than trying to dust or spray mites all the places they might hide at the exact time they happen to be there. When treating the chicken internally, the mites aren't repelled from the chemical that will kill them (as they can be with dusting), and the chicken itself is a magnet for them to come & get exposed.
It is a good idea to treat again in 2 weeks to catch newly hatched mites.
I don't know that a withdrawal period has been established for Moxidectin, but I'd wait several days to a couple weeks before eating eggs, etc.

Note: Moxidectin seems effective for the larger, normal chicken mites, but not for Northern Fowl mites.
