The Easter Egger is not really a breed. They are relationed to the breeds Ameraucanas and Araucanas, then bred with many different breeds so they no longer fit either breed's standards. They usually have muffs and pea combs, but come in nearly every variety and color, some even have ear tufts or are rumpless. Each EE is different, but overall they are usually a smaller bird that lays pink, green, or blue eggs. They are normally friendly and calm, and their colorful eggs make them a popular choice in backyard flocks.

friendly and docile
They are well-loved for their friendly and docile temperament, making them an excellent choice for backyard flocks, especially in family settings. Easter Eggers are hardy and adaptable to different climates, particularly cold weather, thanks to their small pea combs that are less prone to frostbite

I love how people are coming together to grow this community
Pros: Pretty pattern
Calm
Cute cheeks
Colorful eggs
Cons: Skittish and gets out of brooder
Mercedes is a great hen. She is a bit skittish and flies out of the brooder, but she loves to be held. Can't wait to see her colorful eggs

Super friendly!
Pros: They love people, mine run up to me every time I walk in there
They're very cuddly, and mine really enjoy hugs
Cons: Rather loud if you don't give them attention right away
Mine tend to peck me if I don't pet them soon enough
Easter Eggers are one of the best "breeds" there are. I've had seven so far, and all of them have been super sweet. They're the first ones to greet me in the morning, and whenever I squat down, they run up to me for hugs. One of mine is blind, and she makes a LOT of noise if I go out there and don't say hi to her right away. Once I pick her up and snuggle her she quiets down instantly.

Amazing birds, five stars, would recommend!

My hens are somewhat aggressive towards other chickens and the roosters are downright mean. But I have never had any health difficulty's. My EE hens are smart but not to smart (meaning they don't escape as much as the other chickens do).

Thanks for your review on it! I am going to buy one next year because the nearest chick hatchery here is ending its chick season.

Is that an easter egger in the picture? I have one of those and didn't know what kind it was

When they start to lay, they will probably get friendly towards you. My two were kind of stand offish but one is very friendly now, squats and likes to be petted. My only problem with EEs is that both of mine lay brown eggs!

I completely second @otakalhasas on that one. All 4 of my EEs used to be SUPER hateful, but once they started laying, those girls are quite docile and almost friendly. Plus, they give me beautiful blue and green eggs!

Alexandra33, I'm jealous of your egg colors! Next time I'm getting Crested Legbars but I do like the EEs - so pretty!

My oldest EE that is laying is off and on social with us, and she is lower in the pecking order than most of the other birds. She is fine with it, and accepts her role. I try to go into the coop when they are all roosting for the night and give them each some attention, a little scratch and loving, and that has softened her up. She will hop into my lap now and then and loves to be petted. The other two EEs are still under egg laying age and are not very social, but, as they get used to my nightly routine, and then start laying, I expect they will be much more social with me. I've seen all of my chickens go through a time when they were not interested in being touched or held until they start laying, and then magically they are more open to it.

@grannyh6 , if you're talking about my profile picture, that's a buff orpington cockerel.

@otakalhasas , good to know!

@teria Right now, if I go into the coop after bedtime when they're roosting (or during the day when they're hiding), I can pet them or scratch them or even pick one up and they're usually calm about it. But when they're on the ground, it's SEE YA!

our we had harder time to decide if it was a rooster or a hen, until she laid her first egg at almost 7months old. This breed does take longer than most to mature. She started getting friendlier the closer she got to maturity and now she is laying we can pick her up even during the day time. As a chick through first 4-5 months old, was more like catch me if you can I'm a race chicken lol

My EEs are not very friendly but I associate that with how they were raised before I got them, because the Barred Rock that was raised with them is the same way. My bigger problem with the is that they are just shy of 2 years old and have completely stopped laying. We haven't had a blue egg in 2 months.

My EE Roo is pretty friendly. My female wont even eat out of my hand. I didn't raise her though, so I just figure her old owners were not very hands on. I got her at 4 months old. The rest of my flock is very friendly besides her. None of my girls are laying yet. Maybe she will be more friendly then. I am excited, getting closer to egg laying. probably still a month or 2 to go though.

You've heard of "dog years"? Well what you are going through is what I call "chicken months"! Those last couple of months of peeking in the nest box, waiting with such excitement for the first eggs, are some of the longest months on this planet!!!!! No worries - the eggs will come!!!!!

This breed's ratings would shock me to the core if I didn't understand how the ratings are established. However I will concede that some of the birds are quite attractive and I can understand a liking for pastel colored eggs.

Yes they are skittish but they are very sweet and their eggs are gorgeous! My EE is probably my fav she is so beautiful and such an enjoyable bird!

Do you recall when your girls started laying? ..I've been told EE's and other blue and green laying hens are a little later to mature. ...Thanks in advance
