Hen won’t leave coop- but hasn’t laid an egg

I have the same issue but my girl Ruth, a Colombian Wyandotte. She won’t leave the nest but will eat and drink when I brought her inside. She has pooped a greenish white loos one. When I put her down she doesn’t do the penguin walk. Yesterday I cleaned her vent area very well and put some ky...

    Hen or cockerel

Thanks. I had my first rooster chick last year. It was fairly obvious now from an early age. These are so different from each other in pretty dramatic ways. I will be shocked if they are not. I will post updated photos at 6 weeks.

    Hen or cockerel

I am raising 6 chicks for a friend. They were purchased as a sexed group. I do realize there is a 10% chance to get roos. Here are two each of welsummers and buff bramas. They just look different. There are also two barred rocks who seem huge with pronounced tail feathers. How crazy to have 4...

Review by 'OliveGrace' in article 'Integrating new birds at 4 weeks old'

What do you feed your mixed flock since the chicks are still on starter feed. Do you feed the hens starter as well. I have only one hen left of my original 6 with 4 new chicks. The one hen free ranges during the day and I try to put out crushed eggshells for her for a calcium boost that I don’t...

    Lost two chickens

So true! I have only had chicks since 2018. I was very lucky for the first 1 1/2 years. I lost my first 2 of six to predators and one from egg yolk pernitis (sp?) only 6 weeks ago. It has been difficult. I love each of them so it has been hard. Thanks for you kind words.

    Lost two chickens

I agree. But what about the feeding if there was no disease?

    Lost two chickens

What about feed? Since the chicks are on starter feed. I would be fine for my hen to eat starter and not lay if it wouldn’t hurt her.

    Lost two chickens

I had 3 2 yo hens from my original flock of 6. I have 4 6 week old chicks in a brooder. Yesterday my EE and Sapphire Gem were not right. No interest in eating meal worms and no resistance to being picked up. I made an appointment to see the vet with them this morning. When I went out to get them...

Finally Got my Roo To Stop Crowing!

I don't post much and don't have much of a chance to read the forums. I do hope you will reconsider you decision to not post more about your roo and the collar. When I read your post I loved your humor and laughed out loud at the hens helping him remove his collar! I could tell how much you...

    No Crow Rooster Collars?

Thanks so much for the thoughtful reply. Your analogies were very helpful for me to understand the process. I would love to have a rooster but could not even think of it without the collar. I am trying to figure it all out now.

Introducing a mature rooster into a small flock

I have 5 hens who are about 18 mths old. I recently lost my silver laced wyandotte to a predator. The person i get my chicken feed from has a large Maran rooster that is available for adoption. I would like to integrate him into my small flock for protection and to make a more natural flock...

    Somebody please help!

My 10-month-old Easter Egger went through a molt when her sisters at the same age did not. Since I am new to keeping chickens I was concerned. She came through fine and is finally looking like her old self again. When her feathers were coming back in, the other chickens pecked at them and caused...
