(New post to add new picture. Bear with me!)
Fast forward to this morning, two days later. First thing this morning, I go to let the geese out. The gander is in a tizzy. He bit my finger! LOL (It didn't hurt too much.) Two of my girls, Gigi and Blondie, are in nest boxes, and the gander is...
Very exciting news! I came home from work Monday evening and found this in the goose pen:
Look at the size of that egg! Ouch.
My geese hatched last April, so they are 10 months old. Truly a first egg ever.
I have more pictures but have kind of forgotten how to post them.
Shouting...
Hi all! I'm in Cumberland County. I have a small flock of chickens, and I am looking to get a few started geese this spring/summer. (Started geese, because I am not eager to raise goslings in my house! ) I think White Chinese geese would look amazing on my pond. Or anything gray. Actually, I...
I've kept chickens for many years. I've had dozens of roosters over that time, and have admired their beauty, but considered them dangerous animals, and a necessary evil if I wanted to perpetuate my flock. It came to the point where I kept hens only. Not that there is anything wrong with that...
My knee jerk reaction is "Mmmm.... Roosters taste just like chicken". I would certainly kill and eat them. Other folks may have other ideas. Maybe they are young and hormonal and could be separated out completely until they mature and possibly mellow out.
But since you do already have a nice...
I once had a broody Blue Andalusian hen who rejected certain chicks. I had ordered Black Australorps and Rhode Island Red chicks from a hatchery, and she would only accept the Black Australorps. I thought that was interesting, as she was a blue/black/splash kind of bird, only wanting the black...
I don't know how many breeds of chickens I've had over the years. Lots. I've liked them all, more or less, and can't recall any that I simply would never have again. There are some that really stand out from the crowd, and will always have a place in my flock.
Red / Gold Sex Links - I know they...
This article truly gave me Ayam cemani facts I didn't know. Interesting birds! I have noticed mention of them on the forum lately, and I was curious, so thanks for the information.
(The faked black eggs made me laugh!)
I really enjoyed this article. Very practical, very in depth instruction. This will be useful to me as I attempt to find a full-time flock rooster. Thank you!
Good article on a gentler way to handle roosters. I'm determined to keep a rooster with my flock this time, after years and years of halfhearted attempts which inevitably went wrong. It's me. I'm the problem. That much is obvious. So I'm studying up, and I appreciate your viewpoint.
Looks like you got a nice mix of breeds. I like to imagine that I might one day order a fry pan bargain and get a bunch of roos to evaluate in hopes of finding a great flock rooster.
Please keep us updated as they grow and mature.
Ok. Generally speaking, people either love Mediterranean birds or they hate them. I love them. And I recognize that they are not for everyone.
They are extremely active. They don't like confinement, and are escape artists. Heck, they can fly. And I don't mean fly like a big fat chicken. I mean...
I really like Red Sex Links. They start laying early and they just lay and lay and lay. I think of them as the quintessential brown egg layer, and I almost always have a couple of them in my flock. They lay a nice brown egg almost every day during the egg laying season.
I have 2 now that are...
