One year ago, I drove out to Meyer Hatchery and came home with five adorable little chicks. Little did I know what a great set of beautiful birds I was adding to my flock! Here they are, the birthday girls:
Frou-Frou, my beloved blue splash Marans. She is one of a kind in my flock, and truly one of a kind in personality as well!
She Who Sleeps Standing Up the pretty partridge Plymouth Rock, whose beauty is rivaled by none!
Fancy, She Who's 'twin', has grown beautiful as well, and I just love her little flute-like voice.
Pretty Poggy the speckled Sussex, the adventurous one who I had to track down in the woods to get a picture of!
And finally, the little bird that could, Iddy Biddy! One year ago, I was not sure she would live to see two days old. Now just look at her!
Of course, I had to make them a 'cake' for their birthday! A hollowed out watermelon half filled with layers of yogurt, watermelon, corn off the cob, and cucumbers did the trick!
I figured Frou-Frou wouldn't get any of her 'cake', so I took her aside and gave her her own little mini-'cake'.
"This looks edible!"
Then, she grabbed the 1 off the top of it and ran for it.
Finally, the party got started! The cake was destroyed before I could get a picture of it with the birds!
The partridge Plymouth Rock twins played football with the 1 off the top of it:
There were 'party favors' of watermelon wedges and corn on the cob. Frou-Frou enjoyed both:
The party was well under way, and no one even wanted to go free-range!
Chickie, an 8 year old hen from the original flock, was hitting the 'cake' pretty hard.
Fancy posed for a beautiful birthday picture:
And cuter Scooter brooder even decided to give up on the brooding for the festivities!
Meanwhile, the youngest additions to the flock tried out some 'cake' as well, though at first they were not too sure about the idea. Marama even jumped in fright!
Ihi and Hika Ma were not willing to come out of the brooder for this:
Tiwhiri was cautious:
Even Rangi wasn't sure:
Soon, though, they discovered how tasty the 'cake' was, and began to dig in!
All in all, it was a very successful birthday party for the Fab Five!
