Our elementary school hatches, too. My two favorite hens were "Kindergarten Dropouts!"

Love this! I'm letting the kinders name the chicks that are coming home to my house. Should be interesting!

Barnyard mix. From my hens- 1 Frizzle hen X not sure which rooster (yellow chick) and 1 Olive egger hen X splash or paint silkie roo. The black legs, extra toe and fuzzy legs gave that away! From my co-worker I got two very silkie looking chicks from her Bantam Buff Brahma hen X Black silkie roo.

We each had some eggs from the other person's flock and we got some interesting mixes.

Another co-worker hatched some eggs from both of us but had a very low hatch rate. The incubator she was given to use was not a great model and had problems with the electronics and the turner early on.

So my chicks finally hatched and one of them is having problems. His legs are stuck out to the side (splay leg most likely) but what I'm concerned about is when he's upright his head goes up as high as it can and he behaves like he can't move it. He also keeps falling over. Is the lack of balance a side effect of splay leg or is it something else?

We get a splayed leg every so often out of hundreds we hatch. We fix their legs in 2-3 days at most by using Vet Wrap to make bindings around the legs. Some use a bandaid. You just hook their legs so they stand even underneath them. Here's an article that shows how.

I'd also get some B-Complex adult pills or the cherry flavored liquid is easier to use. A chick would get no more than 1/4 of a human pill, or 1/4 dropper of the liquid.

This can be fixed as long as you do it right away!

My hatchalong babies are home! This was a classroom hatch so they kids got to have them in the class for a few days after hatch. Now we are going into spring break and the chicks came home. They're all mixed in with my 12 days older pullet chicks (Turkens, Orpington, BLR Wyandotte, Smokey Pearl). I was ready to do 2 brooders to start if needed but they all all fine and enjoying each other. Had a couple hours outdoors and now in the house in the brooder cage sleeping for the night. The chicks I hatched from my flock are Olive egger X silkie and Bantam BYM Frizzle X not sure of roo). I hatched a couple from a co-workers flock and they are Black Silkie Roo over Bantam buff brahma. They are chunky blue to lack chicks. I'm intereted to see how they will turn out. I asked for guesses on the chicken breeds forum.
