Hi all. I am a new chicken owner, currently have 12 total. 8 red sex-linked and 4 bantams ( 2 frizzles and 1 cornish bantam and 1 dark brahma bantam). Lately have been noticing one male bantam trying to mount the hens. Of course they don't like it but hoping for the best. Lately he has been squatting down and shaking his butt on the ground. Haven't seen him do this before. Is this part of his mating ritual? Would appreciate any advice on this :) Hoping for our first eggs soon, maybe or within a month or so. God bless

Thank u for posting the video. What he is doing is more squatting and moving his butt from side to side, no scratching with his legs and there are no hens around when he does this. I will keep an eye on him and see if the behavior changes. Thanks again

Hi there! Did you ever find out why he was doing this? My 6 month old bantam silkie rooster is now doing the same thing! Not sure if I need to be worried or not. Other than this strange and sudden behavior he seems fine, is energetic, eats well, and his cloaca looks fine. Would love to know!!

My friend's cockatiel would do this when he was lonely for a female. He maybe has some raging hormones 🤷‍♀️
I was wondering this too! My other Roos don’t do this but maybe they’re not as Randy 🤣. New development though, I checked him out and he does have a patch of bare skin on his belly, I assume from rubbing, and his skin there is very scaly and dry. Some pieces flaked off as I was inspecting. I did not see any mites though. And I don’t think it’s molt since it’s February. I’m still stumped.

A little self-stimulation, it sounds like.
