48” electric netted fence with no roof

Looking for some insight on the idea of using electric netting fence as an additional secure outdoor area for chickens to roam in. Unfortunately due to our neighbors dogs and proximity to the road we can’t free range. Has anyone simply used a 48” high fence without a roof and had success with it? They currently have a run but I really wanna give them some more space to stretch.

We just put up a non-electrified version from Premier1, and it’s working well. There are plenty of shrubs to allow them to hide from hawks, etc. it’s very important that they have easily accessible shelter from above.

Our food-greedy Barred Rock has learned to jump up to the top in one spite where our chairs are to demand strawberry husks, so I’ll be putting aviary netting over a small stretch to discourage her.

I don’t know how much of an electrified fence carries current. If it goes to the top, I imagine that would certainly prevent that.

No, it wouldn't. In order to get a shock on an electric fence, the animal needs to be touching ground and a hot wire.

Large ground birds won't jump up on a wire. They need something sturdy to land on. So the netting keeps them confined.

Without the fence being electrified, it offers zero ground predator protection.

Yes, we just use ours to protect veg beds etc. FROM the chickens.

And the plastic fencing is fairly wobbly at the top, but she jumps up where the Adirondack chair stabilizes it somewhat. Moving the chairs today! There’s nothing like having a 3/4 grown pullet suddenly landing on your shoulder from behind.
