Im worried my 5 month old Easter Egger (legbar mix) named Bindi is eggbound. All my flock her age is laying eggs nearly everyday. Bindi has only laid about 1 egg a week and never in the nesting box. She has seemed more “off” since the egg laying started 3 weeks ago. A week ago I noticed some open mouth breathing/panting and she just seemed slower to move around. The past 24-36 hours she is constantly rapid breathing, panting very heavy non stop. She’s holding wings away from body and only choosing to sleep on cold basement floor, not her straw. She’s hot. Rear is down. Barely walking or moving. Watery white stool and very gurgly sounding stomach. She is eating and drinking some of I hand feed her. I had to put her in my basement because my older chicken was attacking her when she got really sick looking yesterday. She hasn’t laid an egg in probably 5 days. She looks so bad. Every time I check on her I think I’m going to find her passed away. She looks exhausted. I tried soaking her bottom. And put Vaseline all around her vent. Is it likely she has reproductive issues and even if she passes this one it’s gonna happen again? Anyone have a young hen get eggbound this bad and have it recover? This pic was yesterday.

Feel her crop in the morning before she has eaten anything. If it feels bloated and large, she may have a crop issue.

As for checking if she is egg bound, lubricate a gloved finger and feel for an egg in her vent (up to two inches). Be very gentle and careful as not to break the egg. Soaking her vent area in a warm (not hot) steamy bath will also help. A quick acting calcium tablet will help your hen pass the egg at the appropriate dosage. Best of luck.

You can feel for an egg by inserting a gloved, lubed finger about 2 inches into her vent, you should be able to feel it, if it's there. When she did lay, was it a normal egg?
I would give her some calcium, a calcium citrate +D tablet is faster absorbed, but if you don't have that, a couple of tums will work also. The calcium will help her with contractions. Give that once a day for a few days. Warm baths can help her to relax, keep her in a quiet, low light place.

Unfortunately a sad update, Bindi passed this morning. Very sad to lose such a young girl, but relieved she is no longer suffering. Thanks again for the help
