Egg Yolk Peritonitis?

I did trim her feathers, but it was pretty bare there already. After the picture I cleaned the feathers up more, but there was some poop still stuck underneath her vent.

She doesn’t have any swellings and she has shiny feathers. Her comb and wattles are really pale, though.

I have read that a mixture of cinnamon, oregano, and garlic cloves can help chickens with EYP. I couldn’t find any cinnamon, so I mixed garlic, honey, and oregano with water and gave it to her.

I gave her some dog probiotics in her mash I made her, since I don’t have any more chicken probiotics. I don’t know the brand, but I’m pretty sure they’re the same thing as the chicken ones.

When she stands up sometimes she acts like she’s trying to push out an egg. Maybe she’s eggbound and that’s why her poops are so small (?) She doesn’t do this all the time, though.

Hi,
I’m so sorry to hear about your sick hen. I had a hen with egg yolk peritonitis. She had a swollen belly. I removed some of the liquid in her belly and it had signs of yolk in it. I took her to the vet and they said the same thing. We gave her a course of antibiotics, even though the vet wasn’t optimistic. In the end, the antibiotics bought her a couple months of living her best life but she passed way.

From the description of your hens symptoms, it doesn’t sound the same. If it is egg yolk peritonitis, the belly will be swollen. Good luck. I hope that she recovers.
I have an almost 5 year old hen with vent fleet and bumble foot. She constantly has gurgly sounds coming from her belly. I don’t think she’s laid an egg in four months or more. At night she pants (it’s like 60 degrees) and blinks super slowly (maybe she’s just tired) like she’s dying, but in the morning she acts more like a normal hen. She still pants occasionally and is lethargic in the day, but not as bad as the night. Currently she’s in a dog crate, inside. She lives with 13 other hens and a Plymouth Rock rooster. The chickens are in their coop for the winter as it’s super windy and below freezing. She poops out tiny watery poops almost whenever she stands up. Is this egg yolk peritonitis?! If it is can I give her Amoxicillin to help crack down on any infections and what dosage should I give? Any advice for the bumble foot and vent gleet? I’ll post pictures in a bit when I give her her Epsom Salt ba

Thank you! That's good to know. I'm sorry about your hen. Her belly is a little swollen, but it's not super bad. Maybe she's egg bound? She never makes a nest or goes into the nest box, though. Unfortunately I don't have a vet who would be willing or able to treat birds, so I have to treat everything at home.

Ok, so I’m not sure if I just missed it or if it developed in the last few days, but the hen’s belly looks super swollen to me. It honestly felt like a water balloon like people say water belly feels like. This definitely isn’t normal, right?! I’m going to give her 20 mg of Amixicillin twice a day starting tomorrow plus more probiotics. Hopefully that’ll help with any infections she most likely has.

This is a view from the side after I gave her a bath. (She flew on top of a stool:)

Hi, I would recommend watching a video about the proper way to drain some fluid from the area. If there is egg yolk in the fluid, then it is egg yolk peritonitis. If it is, I believe that there isn’t a cure. I’m sorry, I wish that I could be of more help.

That does look like water belly (ascites) which is liver failure usually from egg yolk peritonitis, but also can be a sign of cancer or heart failure. Does she have yellow urates in her droppings? Here face looks blue in the photo above, which also could be heart failure. Has the color improved? I would only drain if the hen is having labored breathing to relieve the pressure. Draining water belly has it’s risks, of infection or shock and death. I usually leave mine alone and make them comfortable, and don’t drain, since it is eventually fatal. It helps most of us to do a home necropsy after death to try and find a reason for the problem. If you do that, take pictures to post here.

Thank you. Her poop is very watery with white urates. I didn't see any yellow ones. Is it normal for some poop to not have any urates at all?
She pants still, so I'm going to do more research into draining the fluid.
The color doesn't look any different. Her skin is still very pale. When you say blue you mean that there is a blue tint to her skin, right? I'll post another picture in better lighting.
I will start her on antibiotics tonight.
