5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Nope! No source for campines yet. I'd love to hatch them. Campine chicks are so colorful. And so pretty as adults.

@debs_flock has both golden and silver. Her breeding pens may not be set up yet and she is on vacation but send her a PM.

She packs shipping eggs very nicely too.

Good Morning everyone. Time for some coffee.

If only the quail pen was ready!  The semester doesn't end for another 2 weeks, and I don't think I can finish it quickly enough, but we'll see.  I really want to join the hatch-a-long!!!

You have time I'd think should be ready for a test hatch just start gathering your parts and get cheap test eggs. Also watch cl for a cheap incubator.

Where we are we get severe frosts and ice during winter and electrical storms (including bush fires) and hail during summer.
Last year power was out for over 24 hours. We had floods here 2 yrs ago, stuck, living off what we had in the cupboard for over 3 weeks
I don't think Aussie really gets a break from any types of weather

Queensland?

Well, IF my Swedish Flower Hens will consent to lay IN the coop instead of in random places we can't always find, I'll break out the bator and play along.

She heard that! If you can lock her in the coop for a few days they Wi remember to lay there again.

Thank you! I am excited and nervous at the same time! I already have the incubator plugged in and playing with humidity levels! Tips and pointers welcomed!

Yes look it up. You will likely want to a just your humidity for Marans eggs . The last time I tried to explain the weight method I used thing ie too many times. If the eggs are 7.5 darkness or above you can also look up lightly sanding them. Sometimes the dark chicken spray paint on the eggs makes them too dense to loose moisture. But often Marans eggs are light at this time of year and easier to hatch.

When should I weigh them and how do I know they are the correct weight?

See above.

I will definitely make sure to run it a few days before I put eggs in there. Glad to hear it is that simple! If all else fails, I'll have my dad do it ;D
I'm really tempted to order some eggs... But I'm not sure... Should I, or should I not? Hmm..

Get inexpensive eggs for your first run. You could put up a wanted ad on Craigslist and look for local eggs too also easyier to Hatch.

I don't want to hatch a huge flock this early in the winter so I found a little incubator that only holds 7 eggs.... it will be purfect!! Hatching egg order put in to arrive on the 9th or 10th and I am so excited this might out play Christmas!! My four daughters and I can't wait. My youngest is 4 and even though she has seen day old chicks she has never seen them hatch and gone through the process of the incubation. Her reaction will be just as exciting as the hatch itself!
