I just found out that town can allow me only 6 ft fence. I wanted to build 8 ft high pen for my peacock. In case they won't let me, is 6 ft high enough?. The size will be 20 by 20 ft.

Thank you

I am so so sorry to hear that. Even an 8 foot fence wouldnt keep in a peacock. If they spook they go straight up. Mine jump to a 15 to 17 foot roost every night. Even the babies can jump fairly high within their first week. I was amazed when I got chicks that when trying to catch them, they would jump 7 foot high on top of our kitchen cabinets to get away.

6ft high for the fence is good, but of course the fence height doesn't matter too much because you can use things to make the netting higher than the fence with wooden planks. That is what we did with our pen, the fence is 6ft but the netting goes up to 15ft thanks to a birdhouse on a pole and some planks holding the netting up that high.

That way you can still have your high pen even with short fencing.

Ex: Here is our pen when we first finished it, I know it is hard to see the netting but those wooden planks are holding the netting up high and the cross design lets the peafowl roost on it too.

I agree

That is fine unless you live in snow and ice country then the ice will bring them down without better surports. We don't live in a state known for its snow and ice but last year we had an ice storm that brought one pen all the down and folded some others before we could knock the ice off of the netting.

Ah yes it does all depend on what region you are in...So if you live were it snows you need stronger supports and much better netting than what I have to make it through the winters.

Choctaw Valley Farm that is too bad about your pens that got messed up.

New jersey, and sure, I will have a top wire, we live in town, so he would escape. I will never free range him, as he is a pet. He will sleep in a garage. I will ask town, if the top wire can be higher then 6 ft.
My concern was, whether when he displays, the 6 ft will alliw him to have space for his tail.

If the town want let you put up a high fence, what are they going to do when he starts his sceaming calls (mating calls) next year??? and he will do this even without a hen.

But a 6' fence is good but taller is better.
