87-90 degrees? HELPPP added brooder pic!

is this okay for like 3 day-5 day old chicks? Its the best i have got! 150 watt ceramic bulb! Everyone recommended it!

it would depend on how many chicks you have and how warm the room is where you have them . you can tell by watching them . if they all stay huddled up a lot of the time they are probbably cold if they move away from the direct heat they are plenty warm . they just need the room for them all to get under the light or be able to move away if they need to. hope this helps

It might help if you made a little circular surround to sit below the lamp, with an opening big enough for the chicks to come and go (say wide enough for three abreast, so none gets stuck). The circular shape will help keep the heat in around the chicks. It only needs to be about six inches to eight inches high and big enough to house 6-10 chicks. The lamp hangs above it.

When the chicks outgrow the surround they would presumably be strong enough to handle lower temperatures.

I've made one out of a plastic tree-surround (the sort used to protect tree trunks from whipper snippers). Just make sure the doorway cut out for chicks to come and go is fairly wide so they don't have trouble learning where to go to get warm. Watch out for overheating; you can fix that by raising or lowering the lamp accordingly.

Unlike a lamp heating an entire brooder, keeping a nest area separately cosy means chicks have to venture out into the cool to get food and water. But this is what they do under a hen anyway...

So i block of a section with like cardboard with a little door? Im confused.. Here is my brooder:

Except for now its in the coop and half of it is covered with a thick blanket and the heat lamp is connected to the wire by hooks so it doesnt move. so the only opening with the wire is where the heat lamp is. So it is 87 ish digrees directly under the lamp..

87-90 for 3 day old chicks sounds just fine. Personally I wouldn't want it any hotter than that...

I don't like mine above 90 degrees it makes me uncomfortable. I try to keep mine between 85-90 degrees tops and mine have always been just fine. I think it is just fine.

That temp should be good. Just curious....how deep/tall is your brooder?

I just hatched 2 chicks this morning. My temp is about 89. Im not messing with it. They seem happy.
