A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

That isn’t going to happen 🥰
My first shipped poults were a mixed batch that came from NM to OR
16 was the minimum order. 2 were lost in shipping and immediately refunded by the hatchery. They arrived basically overnight.
Next was 6 ducklings, Indiana to Or. 1 was lost. That hatchery offers smaller shipments, but I elected a refund over having their minimum of two ship...
My order from Porters brought a box of 16 sassy poults that arrived in great condition. Also basically overnight to OR.
Thank you this is very reassuring. I am on the west coast also and worried that it might be too far. May I ask what time of year you ordered? The end-of-year $5 poults are sooooo tempting!

What could it be crossed with? If it has the Royal Palm genotype (b'b' cgcg ngng), then both parents must have been Royal palms.
Could have had some BBW in the background. Royal Palm is the variety but (b1b1 cgcg ngng or ng-) are the color genes. There are other genes involved which relate to the body type.

That makes sense thank you. Do breeders ever try to breed for size and shape (other than the BB birds) or is it all about color?

It's all about breeding to the standard which includes body shape as well as color and temperament with ethical breeders.

Unfortunately due to the huge growth in backyard breeders, there is too much he/she's my baby and I have to make more with total disregard to any good criteria. The small eye syndrome is being perpetuated because of "pets/favorites" being bred.

We all see the threads about the baby born blind, what can I do to save it and many other issues. Ethical breeders cull. I cull any poultry that I do not want in my breeding flock. No birds that I am not willing to have in my own flock leave here alive unless they are going to someone that I know is going to eat rather than breed them.

I want to order! But I'm worried about shipped poults :(. they are so fragile and it is a long way to travel. I don't think I could handle it if I received a box of half-dead poults.
I've never ordered turkeys, but I have received ducks by mail three times.

My takeaway was that if they get cold they can huddle together on the heat pad, if they get too warm, it's a tragedy.

We're super lucky to have a very active poultry community over three counties.

How is your tom doing? They did a Suprelorelin implant on the aggressive turkey in My Life as a Turkey. it seems to have worked.
What was your tom doing to cause the hens to get hurt? I wonder if you could get a decoy hen for him, like the ones hunters use.
Oops, just saw this. As of right now unfortunately no change. He's still been mounting the females when they present. The man has spent all of his life pretty much displaying like 24/7 so I am afraid he has too much testosterone to be quelled, lol. I'm just keeping an eye on him for now. The hen he specifically hurt is one of my 2 lilacs who are both very frail-ish birds in the first place and they're littler then all my other hens.

We're going to try and give it another month or so. I really don't want to have to put him down but as of right now my hopes are unfortunately a bit low. I've been still keeping him and the other turkey hen separated which has been annoying haha. I think they gave him 2 of the 4.7 mg implants instead of the 9.4 mgs(I guess they didn't have them?), and I wonder if those would have worked. However I can't afford to shell out another $568 just to see, if the 4.7's dont work. :(

He's just bad at breeding in his older age. Stomps on their backs over and over again, slips on their wings, stomps on their heads. Tries to mount them from the front??? Lays on them to take a break. He also keeps getting hung up in the straps of their saddles somehow which poses it's own problems >__<

This bird appears to have a conical snood, whereas it's siblings has a dangling snood. Hatch date was June 14th.
Edit: different picture
