Adopting an adult duck

But keep that in mind when adopting if you want to keep her home might want to trim one wing. But before you do be sure to look up how on line because cutting too much can cause alot of blood loss.

Thanks! We were wondering about her flight ability. Hopefully we can clip her wings while still at the shelter to make sure she doesn't fly away. I had a cocktail years ago and clipped his wings regularly, and I just read a few sites and watched a couple youtube videos on clipping duck wings. I just hope it doesn't stress her out too much when she's in an already stressful situation.

Honestly she'll get over it but she'll be kept at home and that's what matters her safety. Mine act like I'm going to kill them while doing it so I squat on either side and hold them between my knees the stretch out the wing and clip. I clip all flight feathers because it's amazing how well they can fly if you don't get them all. doesn't look all that pretty but I haven't lost any from flying away. Solid white Scovy's are so pretty I have 2 solid white ones.

Oh she is adorable! I am so happy you are taking her.

You got some good advice here. I think you will love being ducky parents, they are messy but so much fun. I give mine duck pellets, chopped veggies, and corn, (which you don't need in your area), peas are great treats, and mine seem to like black oil sunflower seeds as another snack. I tried Cheerios, the reaction was lukewarm from most.

Good luck finding a buddy. That will be a win/win. Great for you and your duck and great to adopt another duck. I love to read that people take the adult ducks too. All of ours have been grown when we adopted them. So rewarding. I am a bit jealous sometimes of those who get the fun of ducklings, but it really is great to give a good home to an adult too.

Have fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And more pics soon I hope.

She is very pretty and I'm glad you are going to adopt her. Craigslist is a good place to look for a friend too if you want to go that route. Mine love peas and watermelon. It will take her a bit to adjust but she will warm up and she sounds pretty tame so that's a good starting point. Be very careful with your current pets and her. Take things very slowly. How are you going to house her? I think it's better for a little extra stress to clip her wings then to chance her being stressed and flying off. If you need any help we are always here!

She's home now! They actually clipped her wings at the shelter before giving her to us. I built a temporary pen for her and put in a dog crate for shelter, and she's loving splashing around in her kiddie pool. I'll be building a permanent house and better pond for her soon. She doesn't seem to care about peas, and nibbled on lettuce a little bit and then dropped it. She is enjoying nibbling on the grass, and really likes cracked corn. I put just a little bit of it next to her feed and she gobbled it all up, and has eaten a bit of her feed. She seems mellow and curious, not skittish at all unless you reach out to her then she just backs away.

She also seems to like music coming out of my phone. I put on iTunes radio, and she came right over to it! She seems to prefer rock and Green Day. Softer or slower stuff she just ignores, and when Eminem came on she immediately turned around and walked away, so apparently not a fan of that.

Thanks everyone for your wisdom!

She's adorable! I got my first 3 pekin ducks when they were 3 months old and they never had any attention paid to them at their previous owners but since I got them (I lost 1 to a fox) they are so friendly! I still can't just pick them whenever I want but multiple visits to them a day and their favourite snacks; I can now pet them and we like to listen to taylor swift together! Enjoy your duck and have fun!!

She is beautiful and looking at her face I'd say she is probably under 1 yr old or around a year so a youngin. Do you have predators? anything small like a mink maybe able to reach through the wire on your crate, they are horrible predators. Congrats on your very first duck, I believe she has found a very loving home. Keep us updated on a search for a friend and how she is doing. They can live a long time to I have 3 going on 11 yrs old.

oh and keep scratch to minimum since she is at egg laying age. Good layer with oyster shell in a bowl on the side and little scratch for treat would be good. Mine also love dried meal worms.

Beautiful! I share Miss Lydia's concern - everything wants to eat duck!!! Please be sure that she is protected. We often don't think there are predators in an area, then we get ducks and find that there is a long list, large and small, daytime and nighttime, who will stop at nothing to grab a duck. Err on the side of caution. It would be heartbreak on heartbreak for anything to happen to her.

May you have many happy years together.

oh wow she is very pretty. I wouldn't say she's anywhere close to 2 years old though because it looks like her caruncle hasn't filled in yet. She looks like she's about 6 months old, maybe a little more. With my musvovies, I leave their flight feathers intact so they can get away from predators, but mine free range during the day. They tend to fly around not fly away, but if you intend to have yours stay close to you, make sure her pen is completely secured. Make sure you dig a trench around the enclosure that is lined with hardware cloth so nothing can dig underneath. Good luck!
