Hello,

I’ve owned chickens now a little over two years. I’ve experienced most sicknesses and deaths in my flock.

In the beginning of October of 2024 I got four hens from a local swap, three were sold as 6 weeks old and one was close to laying age. All of them except one have grown normal size for their age which would now be in between 4-5 months old. Cuckoo maran and red sex link are fine. But my buff Orpington is pretty small in comparison to the other ones. I can easily pick her up with one hand.

Issue: she has been eating really well from the beginning and gets a mix of pellet feed and scratching grain. Also drinks water with acv. I’m in Virginia and we had our first snow fall and decreased temperature down to the teens, I found her yesterday sitting down in a ball while almost gasping for air and making loud squeaking noises almost like sneezing, but so bad that her entire body moves with the sneezing. She’s the only one out of all my 10 hens with these symptoms.

I’m currently giving her nutri boost, vet rx, and triguard. I’ve seen her try to eat a little bit but gets interrupted by a sneeze. Haven’t seen her drink and have tried to give her some through a drip, but it’s hard with her sneezing so much.

Is there anything else I can do for her? She’s currently in my laundry room in a pet carrier. She’s my favorite girl, she always came running to me when called and would jump in my arms for pets. I will be devastated if she passes from this.

Hello! Can you put a humidifier in the room with her? Also if you have it, put rosemary EO and Peppermint EO in her bedding. It's very soothing and will help with her respiratory system. I had three hens get really sick, they were in my bedroom for a month recuperating. I had the humidifier running for at least a week straight, probably more. I would get up in the middle of the night to refill when it stopped because they would start sneezing and coughing.

Make sure she's eating, whatever she wants. Once she feels better she'll start eating well on her own.

Thank you! I’ll try doing that.

Did you quarantine these hens after you got them at all?
Any other symptoms? Mucus? Swelling around the eyes?
What doses of tigiard are you using?
Have you ever wormed them?
Don't mix scratch with feed, scratch is a junkfood treat.

Yes, I got them in October and they were quarantined till the beginning of December. I just recently added them all in together last Thursday. No swelling, but she does seem to have clear discharge from her nose. I’ve never wormed them ( never have I had issues with that). They eat the henhouse reserve food that have pellets and other yummy things. I’m not sure about the triguard, I got it from Amazon, I make a mixture of it with water to dilute and then add it to their water.

The only triguard that comes up is for people, is that it?
