Wife and I Have been living here on swamp cooling for 15+ years then we hear about a mini split that could run on battery's but did not need them.
The Unit is DIY buy you will need help with the exterior unit if you chose to do this. I am 70 years old and broken down ( Fat old Gray Lame) with basically no common sense so after research and I called the company and bought one. We are one week in and it is great Summer in the swamp Hot outside cool inside. I don't have the AC circuit on at all I just hooked it to Six 315 Volt panels. Comes on at daylight and Off at sunset. The house 715 to 800 square feet. Nice. I know somewhere someone is working on a window unit based on this mini split for right now this is a game chnger in my book. Now the window unit when it gets off the ground is going to be fantaskik. I hope to be alive to see it. Here are my thought on The EG4
This is more of a review. I Did have Six 315 8.9 Amp panels just waiting for a job to do. I took a gamble and found I did not need to attache this to my inverter at all I can but I did not. This is a review not a sales pitch.
Insane Yes . I Bought The EG4 DIY Solar Hybrid Heat AC Unit The cardboard template made things easier ( A lot )
AC & Heat the holy grail of solar DIY, Finally some one made a unit. I did have a electrician doing it so as to not void any warranty on it. I picked it up in Signature Solar Sulpher Springs Texas to avoid shipping. It was not what I expected I Thought small Podunk Barndominium company but its a large ware house area and the EG4 company is a mile down the road. I guess they work close together So far the only bad thing I have happened across is the lack of the control unit I E Remote. I will have to call and ask. Its on the packing list but its not in the crate. The plus side of all dealings with this company is the IT staff & the Tech support staff. For a DIY self-er that is worth a mint and yes I did use them a lot. The electrician I used was interested in the unit . The drain hose wire leads all needed to be tightly bound together before it is placed in the hole through the wall. Easy lifting just bulky.
The outside unit is a two man job, I used the wall mount and for that you will need have small fingers it is tough to start the nut with old thick hands like mine.
ALL in All the AC side install went well. Now for the DC Side. Panels Six 315 watt 38 volt Mono Panels. PV Wire used Wired to a 1000 Volt 10 Amp Breaker Disconnect to a combiner box and out with 10 gauge Direct burial Romex Gray UF 100 ft Run all underground then to a terminal box wired out 1 10 Gauge PV wire 30 ft to the AC unit. I will update one this is in service. Up date once the MCV connector hooked up. Flipped the Breakers to the AC side off. 71 degrees up and running this is day one I will update. For now I need to extend the drainage hose and clean this install up. Wires & Pipes This one is my fault I ran them in the visible spot hurts the look but not the function.
The Painful part and worst part was Paper work and warranty registration . Write down and take a photo of Packing label and the Product information on the unit before the install. Had to get on a ladder and search for it .The EG4 website is a pain to register on. I spent half a day trying register the Unit and kept getting kicked off the site. Call your vendor a good one ( Signature solar went above “Weston specifically” and beyond on this one and they are why I am buying a second one ) they will be very helpful on this issue once again.
Good Luck with your install. It Is and can be a DIY Job me I am good to go.
