Air sac determines sex.

Today was colder than yesterday, high 12, low 2. There were 3 white eggs when I checked around 1 pm then a green egg at 5:30. 3 side air cells and one of the white eggs had a centered air cell.

Yesterday I said I set the OEGB eggs but actually decided to wait until the incubator arrives so that I can set standard eggs instead to sell at the May 10 auction. I’m on maternity leave but going back to work in June. Even though I won’t be working full time I have demanding jobs and don’t want too many chicks to care for. The silkie eggs will also join the OEGB eggs for o reach total of 25 eggs for the 25 egg incubator.

Gap means male, no gap female? The younger chicks’ wing pictures were taken at 2:30 today so 24 hours before the 2nd chick hatched at 2:37 pm yesterday but I don’t see any feathers except on the half EE chick. Does that mean 4 males and 1 female?
Wait on the fresher guys little longer?

Yep, gap means male most of the time, I say most because there's small chance of it being female.

Sure I’ll be taking pics daily if I can.

So now it seems one out of 5 are female for my home hatched chicks and 1 out of 4 for the silkies I adopted. 7 out of 9 are probably cockerels. Thank goodness for auctions. I want to hold on to them as long as I can to do selective breeding but chicken math again.

I changed my username from bantamsrmyfav to this one to not discriminate against standards as I also have standard hens but here I am hoping the only birds I’ll be selling at auction are standards.

Even though it was colder today there were more eggs, 4 side air cells, 2 centered. There was about 14 hrs 50 min of daylight today.

The brace I made yesterday for the light buff polish chick got dirty so I made a new one today.

The smaller chicks were getting pooped on so the silkies are in a basement brooder with a pet heat pad.

Smaller chicks will go there when the 15 eggs hatch at the end of the month and silkies will go outside.

25 eggs went into the new incubator. 6 lemon blue OEGB, a dozen silkies from one place and a half dozen from another plus a white egg from my flock. The white egg probably isn’t fertile.

I said it was colder but not the temp yesterday which was a high of 12, low 0 C. Today was a bit warmer, high 11, low 7 C. Less hours of daylight though at 13 hrs 48 min. We still had about the same amount of eggs. I have a cold so didn’t get around to candling them but plan to do so tomorrow with the other eggs.

I took the brace off of the light buff polish chick as she has accumulated waste underneath it. It seemed to help her feet a bit.

The 6 eggs from yesterday when it had been warmer than the day prior are 4 centered, 2 side air cells.

Today it is even warmer than yesterday with a high of 16, low 2. There are 5 eggs, 3 with side air cells and 2 centered. This is the first time where it is warmer the next day but there are more with side air cells. For daylight hours today it is 13 hrs 50 min.

I used to not wash hatching eggs to remove the bloom but some were dirty and I read of people and hatcheries using hydrogen peroxide to dip the eggs in and there was also a suggestion to use water warmer than the egg, dish soap, and vinegar. I put a squirt of dish soap in a plastic container, filled it with water that was 117 F, and a capful of vinegar. I put these eggs from yesterday and today in there except for a polish egg that was laid around dinner time. That egg looked clean anyway. Then I immediately put them on paper towels while I emptied that water and filled container up with hydrogen peroxide then rolled each egg in it and set them to dry. Some were still dirty so I pat those with a paper towel. So far the eggs look more porous so I almost regret doing that but these eggs probably aren’t fertile because of the rooster died almost a month ago on March 25. Except for the satin silkie’s egg. I’ll put them in the incubator tomorrow after I candle the eggs that are due to hatch May 8th, they’ll be on day 7.
