Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

if you look at the split chick you can see a blue tint to the down... At least I do. This down coloration is consistent with the splits I hatched this spring.
Look specifically at the down on the shoulders... Thats the pattern i noticed on mine. It is contrasted well by the black wing feathers when then they come in .

Oops! Those two black ones are my barred rock/welsummer cross. Here's the Black Ameraucanas.

My apologies for the error. I am working from an iPad, and when selecting photos they are tiny little pics to choose from. I took the photos with the iPad too. I wish I had caught the mistake quicker and avoided confusion for anyone.

The lavender chick is really feathering out now and is simply gorgeous. I saw the parents and pray, pray, prayed for a lav female because I thought they were the loveliest chickens ever. (I am partial to grays.)

And yep, when photographing them, the bathroom window was right over their heads. There are no dots on any other chicks. That would just be lighting.

Now I am confused. I am new to this breed and especially evaluating chick down.

You are saying the black chicks might be blue? And as adults they would be a dark gray?
I purchased a variety pack of eggs, and these two eggs were marked "BL", so .... maybe......
When they hatched out black, I assumed BLack. I appreciate a course correction if I am veering the wrong way.

Dont let me confuse you... I thought i saw something in the down color of the splits but but now I am not so sure...

You can't tell from just looking, you know it from breeding.

If you are see purple in your bird you should not breed them. Green sheen is what you breed for. You can NOT tell a split by look. I have 75 or more that I have had over the past couple of months and if I could tell split from black I would be FLYING. they look the same. You can test breed them to find out but that is the only way.

Unless you know what you are breeding. I toe punch my chicks when they hatch so when they grow out I know which is black and which is split to lavender.
