Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I just wanted to share a few pics of our F1 generation chicks.

I am so pleased with them, especially the pullets! These are my daughter's 4-h project , and the Ameraucana's have been so easy to be successful with. Our other breed has been a bitter disappointment (we unknowingly purchased severely inbred stock and the genetic deformities are increasing exponentially with each generation). These youngsters hatched in late Feb and late March, about 4 weeks apart, and my daughter is taking them to their first show in a couple of weeks. I think the young cockerel is going through an awkward phase right now, and he is the so low in the pecking order that even the pullets 4 wks younger pick on him. I hope he will toughen up a bit as he matures. He seems to have lost the nice lacing he had before puberty. Is that normal? I really expected him to be a darker blue.

My pretty girl with her pretty birds.

My eggs do look like those, not green, I wish my girls would start laying again, so I'd have something to show you. lol

On the egg color thing, I have only BLUE egg layers in my EE pen. Definitely NOT ameraucanas. I do have an Ameraucana that lays a green egg, she has been relegated to the EE pen because she throws straight combs..... I think.

Hi there!
I have 2 hens that I was "told" were Ameraucanas, however, I think I only have one. I'd love it if y'all could tell me if I'm correct on the one.

Lola is what I think is a white Ameraucana. I'm thinking that Fiona reddish (not sure of the coloring) EE. I've gotten bluish green almost aqua colored eggs from both of them.
I also believe that Happy (Black Frizzle Cochin Banty) and Lola got together and made me a pretty baby(yellow peep) I do see muffs, not sure if she has the beard, so maybe she's a Frizzle Ameraucana? Wondering what color she's (guessing) going to be, she's not showing a true white with her frizzle, and she has several black spots on her, one on top of her head! lol
I'm not sure who the other chick belongs to(black and pale yellow peep)... They are 12 days old today. Maybe Mac (White Laced Red Cornish Banty???)Not sure about what Mac is, other than a straight run of bantams from the feed store that bought from Ideal. Both of my roos are 6 months old, so I was totally surprised to see them playing baby making games.
Thank you for your opinions! :)

The white one could be. You would need to test breed it to another white and see what you get. Green eggs happen because of brown egg genes. Most birds used to make other colors or improvement are brown egg layer, like the Orpington. Don't worry about the egg color yet. Your bird seems to have the correct phenotype, now you just need to figure out her genotype.

I'm posting from my phone. Sorry about splitting up the post.
#2 - Correct color. Single comb. Sigh.

#3 & # 4 look nearly identical, so I'm just posting a photo of one chick. Correct color & correct comb. Does it look like they'll develop muffs or beards? They have very slightly puffy cheeks. I assume I should just re-home these 2 as well? I don't have enough space for a separate laying flock.

There are several options here. I will tell you young AM's go through a period where they don't have much muff/beard. Its when there body has feathered but the head hasn't. Give the bottom two a chance. You may regret it if you rehome them to soon.

I have produced some like this.Don't be too quick to rehome these. You may have even got eggs from me as I have sold some.My rooster that is producing these is 8#.That is why I used him even though he is single gene for pea comb and beard. Some of the hens are also. This is a project color. My hen line is on the small side for large fowl. For me this size improvement was needed. At present it is hard to buy the really good lines.Harry is not going to catch up on orders for a year or two as I recall.

The white one has a very good beard.I see a yellow beak so she has yellow skin and the bottom of her feet are probably yellow.I see in all the pictures her tail is carried to one side [wry tail].It is inherited.Start where you are with what you have and don't be discouraged.John Blehm started his large fowl whites many years ago with over size bantams from me and a white EE that he bought elesewhere.I can probably supply you eggs of some good whites next year. That would save you time.Either way enjoy your birds.Pipsnpeeps has excellent whites as does Wayne Meridith and Bob Rennelet I may have misspelled his last name.Check out the breeders list on the Ameraucana breeders club website.
