My 6 month old Sexlink was attacked by something. I have cleaned with peroxide. Applied triple antibiotic cream. Sprayed with Blue Kote. She is eating, drinking, clucking, and pooping today.
I am giving her electrolytes and aspirin in her water.
She has a flap of skin hanging at her side with feathers still attached. Do I leave this? Does the wound need trimmed any more? What if the would was a little dry before I was able to start to treat her?

I would trim the feathers away from the wound.

Spray with Veterycin or sterile saline solution. Coat the wound with triple antibiotic ointment. Repeat twice a day to keep the wound moist. Do not cut the tissue away, @Eggcessive, @azygous or @Wyorp Rock will advise you further on that.

If the flap is still warm and appears to have a blood supply, you can use it as a skin graft. If the flap is gray or black and dried out, it's probably not viable. Any feathers still left on the viable flap can be kept intact. That area will then repopulate with feathers. Stop using Blu-kote on the large wound. You need the wound to remain moist. Blu-kote dries it out and slows healing.

Here I am posting my complete list of instructions to care for a serious wound:


1. Treat for shock as the number one step. Give warm Gatoraid or mix one teaspoon of sugar into one cup of warm water with a pinch of salt and baking soda. Have the patient drink it all or syringe it into the beak. Dip the beak to show the patient it’s sweet.

2. Flush the wound well with saline. This is better than soap and water as it maintains the pH balance of the tissues. But warm soap and water will do. You need to wash away the bacteria from the wound. Scrub away all blackened or dead tissue.

3. Inspect the wound carefully. If it has a skin flap dangling and it’s still pink and warm to the touch, keep that. Do not cut it off. Look for bite, tear or puncture marks indicating a puncture wound. If you see this, the patient will need an oral antibiotic such as amoxicillin. Bacteria from the predator’s mouth can be injected deep into tissue and can kill in as little as 24 to 48 hours. You may want to try to obtain some amoxicillin from your vet to treat the bacteria that may have been left behind in the puncture wound.

4. Use a topical antibiotic ointment such as Neosporin, triple antibiotic ointment without pain killer in it to coat the wound. If there's a skin flap, lay it across the wound that has just been coated with the ointment. Then smooth on a generous amount over the top of the skin flap to hold it in place. Manuka honey is also a good wound treatment for a large wound and will keep it moist.

5. Gently scrub the wound every day with a soft wash cloth following the above steps. This will get rid of any non-viable skin cells that will attract and support bacteria. Keep the wound covered with the ointment. Never allow the wound to get dried out or it will not heal.

Amazon has it. I like it over regular types of honey because it's very thick and will stay on the wound much better. But it is true that most all honey will work due to the "magic" properties of honey.

Thank you all.
Today I noticed that when she takes a deeper breath to cluck you can hear air being sucked in through the wound, but only when she takes a deep breath. She is still eating, drinking, pooping, and wondering what this hanging at her side is. The skin is ripped off down to and maybe below where her leg attaches to her body. There is a puncture wound in the skin that’s hanging down but grooves from the teeth in the muscle on her back but no punctures there.

Well we’ve made it 144 hours now and she’s still alive, eating, drinking, pooping, and clucking.
