Ant killer recommendation

The safest thing to use would be a bait that is taken back to the nest by the ants, killing the queen and others there. Baits such as Terro or Raid Baits. The bait packs themselves would need to be secured in an area that the chickens could not reach.

Just to add, ants are a natural environmental component, and seldom cause any difficulties for the hens. They also benefit the environment in many ways, so if they are not actually causing a problems you may consider leaving them alone.

Thank you so much! You made a good point with them being good unless there’s an issue so we’re going to wait and see how it goes. And if it becomes a problem, we’ll try one of your ideas! Thanks!

I also wouldn't worry too much unless they're fire ants. I've had excellent results getting rid of ants in my house with Terro.

Alternatively, many insects are repelled by strong smelling herbs such as peppermint, lemongrass, and rosemary. I used these, and a type of geranium sold as a mosquito plant, at my old house with decent results against mosquitoes. Not sure how well it works with ants.
