We have attached nipples to tidy cat litter buckets for our waters. They are a simple DIY and relatively inexpensive. So far, so good. But I can't find any anti-roost cones to fit them.

If you use this same homemade waterer what do you use for a cone?

It needs air, so hubby drilled a tiny hole in the lid, then we just put a large rock on top of the hole. It still breathes, and the rock prevents dust from getting in, but now it's too tall for them to jump up on top of it. (Silkies).

If you got a big rock that rocks back and forth, they'd not like that.

I know that there are anti roosting cones that are round but I looked into them and they are pricey. One thing you can try is cling wrap. It won’t prevent them from roosting but you could just replace and put fresh on. We use it for our heat plate in our brooder. It works. Does leave a film but better them scraping off chick poo.

Thank you. Ours could easily jump on it (australorps and cream leg bars) and I have arthritis so lifting a heavy rock to refill isn't ideal. We have five of these waterers so that would be more work than I want to do.

They won't eat it? And, I usually just spray it off with the hose when I'm refilling

I have silicone loaf and cake pans that tipped upside down would squish if they jumped on them and they wouldn't like that at all! I use them to feed fermented grains in and they can rarely ever scratch them over as they just squish when they try.

These are the cake pans I bet would work the best.

I did some researching cause it is now on my mind and I cannot get it out. That is the analyst part of my brain. Read someone suggest using hardware cloth to make a cone and that would work. Someone else suggested they could used scrap metal roofing too to make a cone. Maybe scrap plywood too. I believe the hardware cloth would be the easiest as the only tool you need is wire snips and you hands. A few things that came to my mind is to use a couple of the cat litter lids and glue to form a cone to sit on top. Maybe a gallon milk jug with the bottom cut out. Not sure if it would be big enough. I saw where they used an old fashion glass known for top. That may help weigh it down. See how my mind goes.
